Asilah 80 - Peter Lemer Avec La Troupe Populaire De G'naoua De Asilah Au Théatre Al Kamra à Asilah

In the period between the 60s and the 70s some famous western musicians came into contact with the Arab and North African culture (two very different things) and were fascinated by it. The results of these meetings are well known. The best known albums in this context are definitely those of Brian Jones and Ornette Coleman who, with a couple of truly incredible records ("Brian Jones Plays With The Pipes Of Pan At Joujouka" from 1971 and "Dancing In Your Head" from 1977), brought the attention of the western public to the art of the musicians of Joujouka, an almost mythological village located on the heights of the Moroccan Rif .Equally well-known are the contaminations with the Arabic sounds of the German group Embryo who created truly fascinating albums in Morocco as fascinating is the album by Peter Lemer in the company of the Troupe Populaire De G'naoua of Asilah entitled "Asilah 80", the album that I propose here.

Peter Lemer is a British jazz musician who started his musical activity in 1965. Pianist, double bass player and composer contributed, with his Peter Lemer Quintet, to the development of the British free jazz movement between the 60s and the 70s. For most of his career he was a keyboard player and in this capacity he participated in the late 1970s at the Moussem music festival in Asilah. His positive experience leads him back to Morocco at other times. In 1980 he gets to know the Gnawa musical culture through the community present in Asilah and invites some musicians belonging to it to perform with him. The result is the recordings merged into this album that his friend Nick Griffiths has fortunately documented and the Association Culturelle Al-Mouhit has published.

The music contained in this record is really special. More than a merger, there is a real collision. A real sound magma. There is no dominant sound but two musical modes that chase and meet. It is really difficult to explain this album. I invite you to listen to it because it has good moments. I am happy to have discovered its existence and for this I have to thank my friend Stefano who kindly reported it to me

For those interested, the original album still seems to be available on Peter Lemer's website.

Credited to Ali Bahia El Idrissi, Moroccan composer and singer originally from Casablanca, in reality the album is the result of the latter's collaboration with a large group of Dutch musicians among which Michel Banabila, a well-known name in the music scene of Holland. A student of Andalusian singing in his homeland, Ali Bahia El Idrissi specialized in the vocal techniques of the Sufi tradition and collaborated with Algerian singers Cheb Mami and Cheb Khaled.

In 1998 the meeting with Michel Banabila led to the creation of two songs ("Idrissi" and "Red Planet") included in the album "Kawakib Al Maghred" produced by Banabila himself and published by the Dutch label "Zuid-Hollandse Popunie" . The success of the project led the two to expand it. The result is represented by the album entitled "Arhil", credited only to Ali Bahia El Idrissi, which sees Michel Banabila as an instrumentalist, co composer and arranger, assisted by renowned musicians.

The record, made in the year 2000, was given to the press by the Dutch label Boudisque, linked to the historic record store in Amsterdam that has given many joys to many vinyl fans.

Beyond the enthusiastic and high-sounding comments made by various music magazines, the album, certainly of a good level, offers a musical collision between oriental sounds and modern western music already widely tested by various groups, both in Europe and North Africa. The various projects linked to the Swiss label Barraka El Farnatshi are an example (successful, in the opinion of the writer) of contamination between Moroccan musical culture and Western sounds.

Compared to these, however, the album by Ali Bahia El Idrissi presents a greater mix of genres by incorporating both high-level acoustic sounds and electronic suggestions in addition to a decidedly superior vocal style. The high quality of the recordings and the depth of the songs proposed make this album one of the best proposals for the encounter between different cultures made in Europe in the last twenty years.
