Elias Hanna Rahbani is a musician, composer and conductor born in 1938 in Antelias, a village located in the province of Mount Lebanon north of Beirut. Younger brother of the very famous Rahbani brothers (Assi and Masour), supporting pillars of Lebanese music, he attended the Lebanese Academy from 1954 to 1955 and studied music at the National Conservatory from 1955 to 1956 as well as receiving private lessons for over a decade under the supervision of the French musicians Michel Bourgeot, who followed him in the piano study, and Bertrand Robillard, who taught him harmony and composition.
In 1957, shortly before going to Russia to complete the studies that would have made him a virtuoso of the piano, he suffered an injury to his right hand which would decisively compromise his instrumental technique. Once the initial shock has been overcome, he is directed by his teacher towards deepening the composition. At just twenty years of age he was hired by the Lebanese branch of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) to compose the music for various programs. This was his first official job which earned him 3900 Lebanese pounds.
Although excluded at first from the family company for his young age (when Elias was born the brothers were already teenagers), starting from 1961 he was involved in the Rahbani family productions taking part in various tours and composing some songs for Fairuz. At the same time he began to collaborate with the most famous singers of the Lebanese music scene and took on the role of artistic director and music consultant for Radio Libano, a role he will maintain until 1972.
During these years he meets Nina Khalil who will become his wife and will give him two sons Ghassan and Jad, both musicians. The musical career of Elias Rahbani will be very rich and his compositions will contribute to enrich the Arab art of the 20th century. He will move easily in many fields, making music for the cinema (he will make the soundtracks of about 25 films), for the theater, for the radio and for television, receiving numerous awards as early as the 60s. He will compose music for the best artists of the Lebanese scene including: Fairuz, Sabah, Wadih El Safi, Melhem Barakat, Nasri Shams El Din, Magda El Roumi, Julia Boutros and Pascal Sakr.
From a strictly musical point of view, Elias's style differs from that of his older brothers due to a greater lightness and a more marked contamination with Western music, especially French. However, the pop taste of some of his compositions should not be misleading. In reality those that look like simple melodies hide arrangements elaborated with taste and poetry.
Part of the music of this author could be classified as a good Lounge music and the incursions of Elias Rahbani in styles such as Jazz and disco music are not rare while maintaining, if you listen well, the characteristics proper of the music of the Middle East. Perhaps more than the most famous brothers he brought Lebanese music to modernity, thanks to a massive use of Western instruments and a romantic and easy-listening approach. It seems strange that the race for lounge music and film music that interested Western society in the second half of the 90's did not involve this author. Some of his soundtracks, such as "Les Plus Beaux Jours De Ma Vie" and "Un Sourire ... Quelques Larmes ... Un Peu D'amour", should really be rediscovered.
For more detailed information on the career of Elias Rahabani you can visit his personal website or the page dedicated to him at the El Cinema site regarding the soundtracks he composed.

Ziad Rahbani is a Lebanese composer, pianist, performer, playwright and political commentator born on 1 January 1956. Son of Assi Rhabanii and Nouhad Haddad, better known as Fairouz , Ziad grew up in an artistic environment that stimulated his creativity.
Active on many fronts, he is recognized as one of the most influential authors of the Lebanese intellectual scene by virtue of his theatrical works, his writings and his albums that contain satirical invectives and criticisms to the traditional political establishment of his country.
Ziad Rahbani's first known work is "Sadiqi Allah", a collection of writings written in the late 1960s when he was still a teenager. In 1973, at the age of 17 he composed his first musical score for a work by his mother. The famous and efficient Rahbani Brothers company (formed by Ziad's father and Uncle Mansour) had difficulties due to the hospitalization of Assi Rahbani. The writing of the work "Al Mahatta" was to be completed. One last piece remained to be composed of which the text was ready but not the music. Mansour Rahbani will entrust the composition to the young nephew. The song in question was "Saalouni El Nass". The song will have a great success and will allow Ziad to highlight his skills in the field of composition.
With His Mother Fairuz
As well as in the field of music, Ziad Rahbani will become known as an actor by taking part in other works by the Rahbani Brothers, including the same "" Al Mahatta "and" Mays el Rim ". He will also compose the music of various theatrical works with highly politicized content.
Among his first highly appreciated works were the albums "A Rahbani Festival", a reinterpretation of old songs by Fairiuz in a contemporary key and "Bil Afrah", an album which, besides highlighting the author's abilities in the field of composition of traditional music, offers a beautiful philological reinterpretation of old songs from the Arab classical tradition. Eclectic musician and experimenter Ziad Rahbani has entered the family musical tradition by launching, as they say, the heart beyond the obstacle. If the Rahbani Brothers were already the bearers of a wave of renewal in the field of the Levantine composition, Ziad Rahbani has exaggerated, so to speak, the concept. He further explored the mingling of Eastern and Western music, contaminating his compositions with different genres such as jazz, bossa nova, rock, lounge music, which made him one of the most important and influential musicians in the Arab world .All the 80s and 90s saw him involved in various projects including musicals, music albums and radio programs. Among the albums made in the 80s we should mention: "Ana Mush Kafir", a record that represented an important point of reference for the generation that suffered the Lebanese civil war and "Hodou 'Nisbi" work with more relaxed atmospheres but no less full of political content. Throughout his career he has engaged in several artistic collaborations in the most fruitful of which were undoubtedly those with Joseph Saqr, Antoine Kerbaj and Bechara Khoury.
In addition to supporting various artists on the Lebanese music scene (very intriguing is the result of his collaboration on the Salma Mousfi album entitled "Monodose", which explores the world of Bossa Nova in an Arabic key) he has collaborated with some of his mother's best records among which "Kifak inta" of 1991 and "Wala kif" of 2001.
A prominent figure in Lebanese society, his political and religious positions have made him a controversial figure, admired by some and criticized by others. Known for being atheist and communist Ziad Rahbani has a longstanding relationship with the Lebanese leftist movements. In an interview with journalist Ghassan Bin-Jiddu, he stated that the massacres carried out in 1976 in the Palestinian refugee camp of Tall a-Za'tar by right-wing Christian militias was the main reason that pushed him during the Lebanese civil war to reside in West Beirut, the Muslim part of the city.
A supporter of the Lebanese resistance to the Israeli occupation and to the Zionist regime, coming from a Christian family, his political vision has put him several times in contrast with his belonging environment but has made him a respected figure both musically and humanly.
With his Father Assi
