Lemkhaleb

The Ghiwaniyya, that cultural renewal born at the beginning of the 70s in Morocco by musical groups such as Nass el Ghiwane, Jill Jilala and Lemchaheb, spread like wildfire throughout the country and meant that various musical groups would come to life.

Kenitra, a city overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in the north of the country, also gave its contribution to the revival of popular singing with the musical group called Lemkhaleb. Very little is known about them. It seems they were formed in the second half of the seventies and were led by banjo player Hassan Haddush. Both in their musical approach and in their organization they followed in the footsteps of Nass el Ghiwane, the founder group of the movement and the guiding light of the Kenitra group's musical production.

Very little information can be found on their Facebook page which documents the group's return to activity (with different formation). In circulation there is only one CD made in recent years and the album created by the Sawt-Hilali record company for its sub-label Hillali Disques. Both works, not easy to find, offer a nice insight into the art of this forgotten Moroccan group which perhaps would have deserved more visibility.

Nuggets from the Ghiwane Generation / Issue # 2

Second release regarding that almost forgotten music from a truly creative era of Moroccan cultural history. A new handful of fantastic 7 "made by equally fantastic bands. Many of them have never made a proper album and only in recent years some compositions have appeared on commemorative CDs and cassettes. What remains of their work can only be found on some 7 "still in circulation in the collectors market, often at very high prices.

Good listening and good discovery to all

Don't forget to take a look at the first part: Nuggets from the Ghiwane Generation / Issue # 1

Buon ascolto e buona scoperta a tutti

Nuggets from the Ghiwane Generation / Issue # 1

With this post I would like to inaugurate an appointment, which in the intentions would like to be periodic and regular, to present some musical gems belonging to what is called Ghiwane Generation; that group of bands which, inspired by the well-known precursors (Nass el Ghiwane, Jil Jilala and Lemchaheb, in short the sacred trimurti), have contributed to radically renew the Moroccan music scene of the 70s. Many of them have made only a handful of 7 "and very little is known about their history, but fortunately the music tracks remain to testify to their precious contribution.

I would like to propose here some of these real pearls. Some are my own recordings while others have been kindly given to me by friends. The quality is not always excellent (or good) but the spirit is absolutely alive and powerful.

Happy listening to everyone.

Ro'at El Sahra'

Among the many groups belonging to what has been called Ghiwani Generation many have been forgotten and / or obscured by the fame of sacred monsters such as Nass el Ghiwane, Jil Jilala and Lemchaheb. The re-discovery process that took hold in the western area in the early 2000s allowed us to get to know many groups that, although considered minor, made a great contribution in qualitative terms to the music scene born in the '70s in Morocco.

Among the many my choice this time fell on a particular group called Ro'at el Sahra ', literally translatable as The shepherds of the desert.

Information about them is scarce as well as the songs available. It seems they come from the city of Meknes and have distinguished themselves for the use of the flute, played by Abdul Majeed al-Raiwi, in addition to the usual instrumentation of the bands belonging to the same musical scene.

It seems that the group was short-lived and dissolved following strong internal disagreements (seems that the mother of one of the members  has played an important role in the negative fate of the group).

Few of their songs remain in the  handful of 7 "available on the collectors market. I don't know if they ever made an album. What is certain is that their song entitled "Salah Biladi" is considered one of the most beautiful songs born from the Ghiwane Generation.

I have collected here the few songs in my possession; although small, I believe that the collection can give an idea of the value of the group.

As always, if someone has more information I would be more than grateful if they wanted to share it.

Batma & Larfag

Many groups were born following the wave of renewal of the Moroccan music scene during the 1970s. As has been written several times, the pioneers of this musical movement were groups such as Nass el Ghiwane, Lemchaheb and Jil Jilala and the generation inspired by their works is called Ghiwani Generation.

Among the many formations that have contributed to this music scene there is the Larfag group which, in collaboration with the singer Hassan Batma, made an album in 1976, very rare and really valuable from a musical point of view. The information on this group is practically non-existent and what is known is not verifiable. It seems that the group belongs to the Casablanca area and that two of its members, Hassan Batma and Hamdani Mustafa, come from Hajj Mohamed, the same neighborhood where the Nass el Ghiwane group was born. Another member, Abdel Rahim Al-Safah, appears to have been a highly rated Banjo player.

I propose here their debut album, released in 1976 by the Boussiphone label. The cassette version has the name of the group as its title, while the vinyl version printed in France was entitled "Ila an yushib al Ghurab".

There is another group called Larfag active since 1981 but it was not possible to verify whether it is the same formation without Hassan Batma or if it is a totally different group.

If someone is in possession of more information I would be really pleased if he wanted to share it.
