Golden Hands

The period between the end of the 60s and the first half of the 70s brought great musical news to Morocco. Known with the nickname of "Years of Lead", this particular historical period saw the birth of great musical groups that rejected the dictates of the classical Arab music prevailing throughout the North African area and in all the Levant to orient themselves both towards the recovery of traditional Moroccan music (great music was played by groups like Nass el Ghiwane, Jil Jilala, Lemchaheb and Izenzaren) and towards the sonority of a Western origin.

The Moroccan musical groups dedicated to rock'n'roll are really small. Among these, particular attention must be paid to the Golden Hands, Casablanca group, author of truly intriguing pieces.

We know very little about this group and many of the information on the web is quite discordant.

The first single is made in 1967, contains the songs "Mirza" (a cover of Nino Ferrer, French singer of Italian origin) and "Aziza" and is credited to Jalil Bennis Et Les Golden Hands.

In 1969 the group published two singles for the label Pathè Marconi. The name Jalil Bennis disappears and only Les Golden Hands remains. The first single contains the songs "Sahra" and "Raksa", the group represented on the cover appears as a quartet while the second single, containing the songs "Fat El Miaâd" and "Amal Hayati", sees the group represented as a trio. The songs are just instrumental and propose a reinterpretation of the classic beat of Anglo-Saxon matrix in a typically Moroccan key. The song "Raksa" is damn similar to what the composer Abdou el Omari will do in the 70s.
The confusion about the actual members of the band probably arises from the fact that periodically, various musicians joined the original trio.

At this point the production of the group stops (as far as we know). A new single is produced only in 1972. The new work contains the songs "Promises" and "The First Time", the article disappears and only the name Golden Hands remains. If not for the presence of darbuka these new songs (sung in English) could easily be exchanged for Western songs of the late 60s. The group has suffered however an aesthetic metamorphosis adapted to the style of the groups of the time.

Driss Daou-El-Makane
Two more singles will follow. The first released in 1973 contains the songs "What To Say" (part 1 and part 2) and the second one made in 1978 with the songs "Take Me Back" and "Love letters". The music of the group with these works evolves decisively, contaminating itself with folk, funk and psychedelic elements.

The great Moroccan label Disques Gam will publish (presumably in 1978) a beautiful album called simply "Golden Hands" which contains, among others, the song "Al Harka", in the opinion of who writes the best song ever made by the group.

As we said, the information on the group is very nebulous. It seems that it was formed at the end of the 60s in Casablanca and that the supporting trio is composed of the brothers
Thami (also called Aziz) and Driss Daou-El-Makane, respectively on guitar and drums, and their friend Emjid El Warari on bass guitar. It seems they were trained under the guidance of the uncle of Thami and Driss and that their original name was "l'Ange et ses vampires". During an evening, a spectator, after the group's performance, commented on the ability of Thami with the guitar: "this boy has the golden hands". Hence the choice of the new name.

During an European trip, on May 18, 1973 they took part in a competition for bands at the famous French disco "Golf Drouot" resulting in winners and obtaining the right to the publication of a single.

For those who want to extricate themselves with the multiplicity of information on this unusual Moroccan rock group, I make available some addresses where you can retrieve some 'news and I put at disposal how much in my possession about the music of the group.

Golden Hands in expanded formation

Il nuovo lavoro contiene i brani “Promises” e “The First Time”, l'articolo sparisce e rimane solo il nome Golden Hands.

Composer and keyboardist, Abdou El Omari was born in 1945 in Tafraout, a small town in Morocco situated 180 km south of Agadir. It belongs to a generation of musicians who revolutionized Moroccan music bringing it to wider horizons without altering the soul. From many, under the proposed sounds, he is considered a pioneer of Moroccan psychedelia. His musical career has developed at first fairly convectional. He was a member of several orchestras, including the most important was certainly the Royal Orchestra. He served for a time his own flair to the group "Al Ayady At Dahabiyya" (Golden Hands) of Casablanca before devoting himself to the realization of his original compositions.
In 1976 he made his first and only solo album entitled "Nuits d'Ete" published for the record label Disques GAM. The album consists of seven pieces and offers an innovative sound to the Moroccan reality. The keyboard of Abdou El Omari takes on a real journey through the many traditional rhythms creating strange sounds taste spatial traits. To listen carefully it is clear that almost all the samples of what is the musical traditions of Morocco is represented here and manipulated through echoes and various filters.
The album (highly sought and hard to find) has become over the decades a real fetish whose prices in the collectors' market have touched astonishing figures.
From the album were extracts two 7 "respectively containing the songs" Fatine / Layali Saif "and" Rajaat Laayoun / Hind ".

The solo career Abdou El Omari in fact ran out with this work. His activities in the field of music continued as researcher in the broad field of the Moroccan musical heritage and occasionally collaborated with some actresses and singers which include Laila Ghofran, Fatima Makdadi and Aicha El Waad. The most famous collaboration (and fruitful) still remains the one that occurred in 1977 with Naima Samih. The collaboration of these two artists has spawned two 7 " that have become over time (like his solo album) real collector's items.
Remained for many years in the shadows, Abdou El Omari died in 2010 following a long illness. His body was buried at the cemetery Errahma in Casablanca at the presence of friends and family.

Released : 14 Nov 2016

In November of 2016 the guys of record label Radio Martiko have reprinted the solo albums of Abdou El Omari. Of this fact I can only be eternally grateful. In reality it is not a completely faithful reprint. On Side B lacks in fact the song Ourika, replaced by the song Zifaf Filfada, belonging to 7 "made with Naima Samih. Even the tracklist of B side  has changed slightly.

However, this is a great event, definitely one of the best releases of recent years.

AA.VV. - Waking up Scheherazade Vol. 1 & 2

Waking Up Scheherazade is a two volume vinyl compilation of Arabian garage psych nuggets from the late 60s and early 70s, that have been hidden for many many years. The rarest of the rarest from Iran to Morocco. Some great north African and middle eastern early rock trash.

Finding a nuggets album with psychedelic tracks from the middle east and north Africa is hard. One of the reasons why we hear so little of rock examples from Middle Eastern and Arab countries is not that they do not exist, because especially in the 60s and 70s the whole world was open to modern experiments, but many of such scenes quickly closed down in many countries and were replaced by fascist or other extremely “limiting the freedom of creative expressions” Regimes. These records now, stand proud as the voice of a generation that grabbed the opportunity to create new sounds.

The music on the two compilation is not really very psychedelic, It is rather a mixture of 60s rock and pop with a Middle Eastern twist. The singing is in both English and native tongues and the quality of each track is admirable. The wide range of local instruments and the use of electric piano or keyboards is something that adds a particular flavor to it, don't expect anything over psychedelic , just some slightly eccentric early oriental rock music.
