Sharmoofers شارموفرز

From Cairo, Egypt, Sharmoofers is a three-piece band. Ahmed Bahaa (lyrics, vocals and videos, also member of Cairokee), Ezz Shahwan (bass and guitars) and Mohamed El-Arkan (multi-instrumentalist and music producer) believe that music is the key to happiness, and that happiness is music.

Their music will certainly lift your mood and liven up your senses. ‘We’re trying to make music that lifts people’s spirits, that has an infectious energy in a positive way. The same goes for our lyrics, which we try to keep light-hearted and down to earth. Although we did write one somewhat serious song, “Salam Aleikoum” (‘Peace Be Upon You’), about the struggles of an artist, generally we play to make people happy ’, explains Bahaa.

Sharmoofers didn’t start out with any fixed musical style. They base their songs on the positive energy they find in the Egyptian sense of humour and love of wordplay. Sharmoofers don’t take themselves too seriously either: lightness is all. It’s their own way to bring a bit of hope and optimism to many Egyptians disillusioned about their country’s future. ‘Sometimes, you get so down and depressed that the only thing you can do is laugh about it’, explains Bahaa. ‘And we’re all getting to that point now, if not already there. It may be difficult to laugh, but what alternative is there?’ The band seeks no place among protest song writers, and never claimed to be politically engaged. ‘Everyone is good at something. Some bands have been good at writing songs about politics, for example, and some aren’t, the singer says. Look at a band like [XXXX?]. They’ve always been politically active, so for them something like that comes naturally and it’s convincing, they’re not just jumping on the bandwagon. Personally, I’m not that interested in politics, so it wouldn’t be genuine, or convincing. And we don’t want to write stuff that’ll bring people down. We’re not interested in sad songs, break-up ballads or anything like that’.

Their song Kawkab (‘Planet’) was released in 2012. It reflects the band’s desire to disconnect from their everyday lives, so much that they project themselves onto Pluto. They take their listeners to another galaxy and another system of time, imagining funny aliens walking on three feet. The delirious, ethereal, futuristic and Egyptian sci-fi lyrics stimulate the imagination and creativity of their audience.

One year later, Sharmoofers finally released their first video clip, Khamsa Santi (‘5 centimeters’). Shot in Cairo, the song and its clip feature a day in Sharmoofers’ life, which begins with local flooding 5cm deep. Unexpected comical situations unfold: a love message not addressed to the owner has been carved in the car, a donkey carts falls into the water, and so on. Guaranteed to raise spirits and ease you into a better mood, which in these days might be no bad thing.

Gultrah Sound System

Gultrah Sound System est un groupe de reggae tunisien fondé en 2006 par Halim Yousfi (guitare, chant) Wissem Ziadi (violon, choeur) et Malek Ben Halim (percussions,choeur). Ils commencent alors une série de concerts à Tunis mais aussi à Bruxelles en 2009 avec les musiciens de l'époque durant trois ans.

Parallèlement, le groupe enregistre en 2008 une démo intitulée "Jazz fi zzenga", référence à l'origine de la fondation du groupe.

Le groupe est en perpétuelle recherche de nouveaux sons et explore de multiples genres comme le rap, le funk l'afroBeat, roots, raggae, ska... Ainsi, Gultrah Sound System dépasse les frontières du reggae en s'ouvrant à d'autres influences en intégrant notamment la formation Old School composée de Paza Man et Black Na, deux rappeurs à l'empreinte musicale raggae-rap. Le retour sur scène est annoncé en 2012 avec l'arrivée de nouveaux membres permanents : Amine Nouri (batterie, percussions,chant), Chiheb Ben Lakhel (guitare), Mourad Majoul (guitare), Tareq Maaroufi (batterie,
percussions et chant), et Kais Fenni (Basse).

Gnawa Diffusion غناوة انتشار

Gnawa Diffusion is a French and Algerian Gnawa music band based in Paris, France. The group's lead singer, Amazigh (literally meaning 'Free Man' in Tamazight), is the son of the Algerianwriter and poet Kateb Yacine. Although there is a strong Gnawa influence, the band is noted for its mix of reggae and roots music. Gnawa Diffusion is very popular in Algeria and is also well known in many other countries including Morocco and France. The band's lyrics are in Arabic, Tamazight, French and English. Gnawa Diffusion started their career in 1993 with the release of the album Légitime différence.

Nevertheless, in spite of a strong political direction, this band also has more entrancing numbers which focus on self-determination and improvement.

TOOT ARD (Strawberries) is a “mountain reggae” band from the majestic mountainside village of Majdal Shams in the Occupied Golan Heights/ Palestine. Their Lesseiz Passer documents say they are “Undefined” but they are sure they are 73% water and that MUSIC will lead them. Toot Ard has emerged as one of the most promising new bands in the Levant region. Singing in Arabic and weaving classical Arabic motifs into funky African inspired Reggae/ska grooves, they will make every audience laugh, dance, smile and imagine the many possibilities for a better future…

تأسست فرقة توت أرض في نوفمبر 2009 في قريه مجدل شمس في الجولان المحتل، وتضم 6 عازفين. تعمل الفرقة على إنتاج ألبومها الأول، وتقدم عروض في فلسطين والجولان، إضافة إلى تأدية أغاني الفنان الجميكاني بوب مارل

Di loro non si sa molto. Ma i due giovani drusi che formano la band Toot Ard (more o fragole) scatenano in rete l'entusiasmo di amici ed estimatori del reggae nella versione araba. E non più soltanto a Majdal Shams, il capoluogo delle Alture del Golan siriano sotto occupazione israeliana dal 1967. Sono molto stimati e seguiti in tutta la Galilea e cominciano finalmente ad esibirsi in pubblico. I Toot Ard sono ambientalisti e lanciano un messaggio di pace e fratellanza senza dimenticare però i diritti della loro gente sotto occupazione.

WachM'n-Hit واشمن هيت - Hit Wachmn Hit هيت واشمن هيت / single Salamou Alikom

 

Le Roots au Maroc, c’est indéniablement Wachmnhit : sept musiciens sous la houlette de l’inspiration, allant de l’influence de leurs idoles, les Wailers, à celle, plus proches, des Gnawas. Ces jeunes Marocains ont constitué leur groupe en mai 2005. Un an après ils ont remporté le 1er prix du Boulevard des Jeunes Musiciens. Des bancs de l’université Ibn Tofail à Kenitra où ils se sont rencontrés, les Wachmnhit sont parti à la conquête du Maroc pour faire découvrir leur musique pleine de sonorité reggae roots made in Morocco .

Après leurs prestations scéniques souvent tranchantes et bien travaillées, Wachmnhit s’annonce comme l’un des leaders du reggae. Leur premier single « Taalim » un titre bien concis et précis ,critique acerbement l’enseignement supérieur.

Mais cette véhémence n’est qu’un simple trait de la vivacité du groupe, Car ce n’était en fait qu’un avant goût de leur prochain album éponyme « Hit WachM’n-Hit » dont la sortie officielle a été en avril 2009.
Plus qu’un simple groupe de musique, Wachmnhit est avant tout une véritable famille. C’est une équipe bien soudée de musiciens, une bonne entente entre eux. Ils sont sept, tous issus de l’atelier de musique de l’Université Ibn Tofaïl de Kénitra. Il s’agit de Ouahid Ahmed, un excellent chanteur et compositeur qui laissa sa place à Abdelhak El Achiri à la fin de l’année 2011, ce dernier s’inspire du Gospel et des différents chant tribaux nord africain .

Abdelkrim El Berrah, l’un des plus talentueux guitaristes solistes. Bien qu’il soit inspiré par la chaleur de la musique Bleus, il possède un amour démesuré pour l’improvisation.

Ali Ouguerd guitariste choriste confirme toutefois son goût prononcé pour le métissage culturel, bon vivant comme le qualifient ses amis, Ali consacre son temps et son énergie pour le développement de ses qualités artistiques.

Mouad Sahri pianist qui pioche dans les racines du Reggae et du Ska, entre autres pour embrasser les multiples facettes de la rythmique du genre.

Fayçal Boudli bassist qui ne fait pas les choses dans la moitié. Inspiré du reggae du roots et de l’Afrobeat , il ressort toutesfois des mélodies très originales concrétisant ainsi le fruit de ses recherches.

Yassin jbiri, percussionniste chevronné jongle avec les différents types de percussions, offrant ainsi des nuances marocaines aux rythmes reggae .

Salim Akki, un musicien qui a tout d’un grand batteur en plus de sa qualité de choriste talentueux.

En somme, le groupe fusionne, roots reggae , ska, ainsi que d’autres styles musicaux. Synthés en puissance, des percussions, des rythmes, la musique de Wachmnhit fait danser et s’annonce même comme le début d’une carrière prometteuse et d’un catalogue riche et diversifié. Ce sont des jeunes débordant de charme mais surtout dotés de voix douces et généreuses aux accents ensoleillés du Maroc. Ils s’éprennent passionnément de musique qu’ils fredonnent depuis leur tendre enfance. C’est leur devise : le métissage culturel. Les sons de la musique nord-africaine se fusionnent à ceux de la musique world. Résultat : Un mélange palpitant de sons et de cultures qui nous mène à ne jamais fixer de barrières entre les différentes expressions musicales.
