Yasmine Hamdan

Yasmine Hamdan is a Lebanese singer and songwriter born in Lebanon in 1976. For family reasons, she grew up in various countries, including Greece, Abu Dhabi, and Kuwait. At the age of 13, while living with her family in Kuwait, she was forced to leave the country following the Iraqi invasion. This experience profoundly affected her, leaving her with the feeling of living through a momentous historical moment.

When she returned to Lebanon with her family, she immediately felt a strong sense of alienation. Referring to that period, she states: "When we returned to Lebanon, I didn't consider it a 'return to my country.' I returned to a place where my parents came from, where I had a large family and where I had emotional ties."

Lebanon in the early 1990s was a very special place. The war was over, and after all the destruction, a certain hope for a better future emerged. This historical moment suggested that anything was possible, and in this context, Yasmine Hamdan, in her role as an internal Outsider, fully committed to pursuing an unconventional lifestyle, saw music as a place where she could rediscover herself and reconnect with the region's past and her family history.

Her encounter with multi-instrumentalist producer Zeid Hamdan (no relation) was decisive.

The two formed Soap Kills, a unique group in the Middle Eastern music scene.

Soap Kills were among the very first bands to produce songs heavily inspired by Western electronic music, particularly Trip Hop. Their music scene was undoubtedly Bristol, but the duo combined English influences with samples drawn from Arabic tradition, creating songs that were alien to the society of the time. Rejecting both English and French, Soap Kills chose Arabic as the language for their songs. While musically they paid homage to musicians such as Sayyed Darwish, Najah Salam, and Mohammed Abdel Wahab, lyrically they addressed themes of love, loss, and urban dislocation.

Founded in 1997, Soap Kills disbanded in 2005 with three albums and a couple of EPs under their belt. The band's work would prove crucial to the development of the nascent Arab underground music scene and would establish the two protagonists as true icons.

After dissolving her partnership with Zeid Hamdan, Yasmine moved to Paris. In the French capital, she met Afghan producer Mirwais Ahmadzai, a former member of the group Taxi Girl and producer of several Madonna albums.

Mirwais Ahmadzai involved her in the creation of an electro-pop album. Released in 2009 and credited to Yas, "Arabology" is a project somewhat reminiscent of her work with Soap Kills, adding a touch of lightheartedness.

The album features refined electro-acoustic tracks with a nod to the world of dance music. The entire project plays heavily on the musician's attractiveness, as she sheds her dark, elusive persona and takes on the role of a Femme Fatale. The general feeling is that this is a work created more for fun than anything else. The artist has always been very reluctant to show her image, and this project represents the opportunity to explore new avenues.

After this experience, Yasmine Hamdan toured the world, moving between Syria, Kuwait, and France with her husband, Palestinian director Elia Suleiman.

In 2012, she met Marc Collins, the mastermind behind the Nouvelle Vague project, a group that revisited old post-punk and new wave songs, reinterpreting them in a Bossa Nova and Lounge style.

Under his production, she released her first album, simply titled after herself. Released in 2012 on Collins' own label, Kwaidan Records, "Yasmine Hamdan"

is an album that capitalizes on the artist's experience gained over the years. Together with producer Marc Collins, she plundered the vast heritage of old Arabic songs from the 1940s, '50s, and '60s, mostly Lebanese, that once delighted the people of Beirut.

The inspiration comes from the art of Omar el Zeineh, a former Lebanese cabaret singer whose light-hearted, sarcastic songs criticized Beirut society and its sectarianism, while maintaining a tender and gentle tone.

In terms of musicality, the slow pace of trip hop still reigns supreme. Alternating between pop, folk, and electronica, these new compositions follow a simple and minimal path, creating a relaxed and persuasive atmosphere only occasionally tinged with a slight sense of unease.

The lyrics are performed in various Arabic dialects, alternating between Lebanese, Kuwaiti, Palestinian, Egyptian, and Bedouin, a process that Yasmine Hamdan would continue throughout her rest of her work.

The album, though well-received, was not widely distributed upon its release. In 2013, the Belgian label Crammed Discs reissued it with a different artwork and revised tracklist. Titled “Ya Nass” the album enjoys greater distribution and establishes Yasmine Hamdan as an exceptional artist of new Arabic music

The acclaim for this new work was followed by a cameo in Jim Jarmusch's 2013 film "Only Lovers Left Alive" (which featured the song "Hal" on its soundtrack) and the original score for the play "Rituel pour une métamorphose" by Syrian playwright Saadallah Wannous.

After extensive tours that took her all over the world, Yasmine Hamdan released her second album, "Jamilat," in 2017. The album's title, like its title track, is a tribute to the poem "Al Jamilat Honna El Jamilat" by Palestinian poet and writer Mahmoud Darwish, who passed away in 2008. A poem that masterfully defines the beauty, fragility, contradictions, and vulnerability of the female universe.

In her second album, the Lebanese singer takes full advantage of the experience she's gained over the years and the various relationships she's established. The album features producers herself, Luke Smith (Foals, Depeche Mode, Lily Allen) and Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Carl Barät).

A diverse and powerful album, "Al Jamilat" offers sonic solutions rich in Arabic grooves, acoustic textures, electronic nuances, and 1980s references. The entire album is imbued with great vitality, a strong desire to break the mold that generates a small, great miracle.

With "Al Jamilat," Yasmine Hamdan manages to perfectly harmonize all her artistic potential, fully confirming her disarming production spontaneity through songs born from a resoundingly genuine yet global approach.

A remixed version of the album, titled "Jamilat Reprise," will be released in 2018.

At the end of this effort, Yasmine Hamdan decided to take a sabbatical to do the things she never had time to do and to reconnect with the people she loves. However, events took an unexpected turn.

The advent of the pandemic, the explosion at the port of Beirut, and the Lebanese economic crisis had a profound impact on the artist, who states: "I had to process all these things. It took me time to gather my thoughts and figure out what I wanted to achieve."

And so several years passed, during which, rather than rushing into a cycle of releases and tours, Yasmine Hamdan took the time to develop material at her own pace, creating for the simple pleasure of creating.

After eight years of silence, her new album, "I Remember I Forget," will be released in 2025. The album, once again featuring the trusted Marc Collins, reflects Hamdan's personal life, divided between Beirut and Paris, where she has now resided for years.

The songs represent an exploration of life in liminality, between the safety of the present and distant trauma. For the lyrics, the artist drew on various sources, including 11th-century muwashah poetry and the cryptic chants of the Palestinian resistance dating back to the Ottoman era—coded verses that allowed women to communicate with their imprisoned loved ones while eluding jailers and censors.

Musically, the album follows the same path as its predecessors, offering a recognizable sound that has now become the hallmark of her solo work.

“I Remember I Forget” is a sophisticated and profound album that confirms Yasmine Hamdan as one of the finest songwriters on the contemporary music scene. A few years ago,

the newspaper Al Akhbar claimed that the artist had undertaken the challenge of affirming and rewriting the Arab musical heritage. Today, we can confidently say that the challenge has been met, and that Yasmine Hamdan is now a mature and profound singer-songwriter, capable of engaging with the most diverse traditions and merging with the Western world without ever abandoning her roots. A strong and independent woman, she has become a symbol for the entire Arab female world.

Disco variegato e potente “ Al Jamilat” propone soluzioni sonore ricche di groove arabi, trame acustiche , sfumature elettroniche e richiami agli anni ‘80.

Alcuni anni or sono

3Phaz is an Egyptian music producer whose name began to circulate seriously on the occasion of the release of his first album in 2020. Released for the Egyptian label 100 copies and simply titled "Three Phase", this first work represented a new and powerful breath of fresh air for the club music scene. The sound proposed by 3Phaz, built largely on complex percussive patterns, very naturally incorporates both the classic elements of the most experimental club music and the sounds of chaabi, mahraganat and moulid music, generating a hybrid that is difficult to catalog in which the various components are systematically deconstructed.

Also in 2020, a cassette titled “Instant Dry Yeats” was released, belonging to Boomkat Editions, musical productions made by the Manchester record store. Compared to the songs made for the first album, the material contained here has a rougher character. The sound is configured on hypnotic rhythms full of a threatening force imbued with microtonal drones, chaabi drums, hardcore techno loops and psychedelic abstractions.

Promotionally, 3Phaz has chosen the path of complete anonymity, letting only his productions speak for themselves, which has allowed him great freedom of expression. His work has begun to arouse great interest also thanks to a series of Remixes made for various labels such as Rinse, Boomkat, Polaar, Nashazphone and Irsh. Worthy of note is his remix of the song “Ras El Ain” by Acid Arab, the flagship piece of the French group’s remix album.

In 2023 he released a new album. Produced for the English label Discrepant, “Ends Meet” confirms 3Phaz’s talent. The album continues and evolves the musical discourse of “Three Phase”, consolidating the style of this brilliant Egyptian producer.

A key figure in his nation’s music scene, 3Phaz immediately attracted international attention, establishing himself as one of the best proposals in the club music scene. The concert held during the “Nuits Sonores” festival in Lyon, broadcast by Boiler Room TV, made the artist’s figure a little less mysterious and helped spread his work, which offers its best side live.

Also in 2023, an EP entitled “DrumTraTrax” appeared on the market, created for the Colombian label TraTraTrax, containing three new songs and some remixes. Among the new proposals, the song “Drum Track” stands out, a lightning-fast sonic assault that has few equals.

3Phaz, together with other exponents of Arab electronic music such as the Lebanese Liliane Chlela, the Palestinian Boykutt, the Tunisian Deena Abdelwahed and the members of the Tunisian musical collective Arabstazy, is the representative of a musical scene that has now come of age and presents itself as one of the most innovative realities of the last decade.

Complex questions and tangled puzzles

A void that holds accountable mistakes made

Should I write about the existing society?

Or should I go back to the history of existence?

Where did we start? And how did we get there?

From liquid to solid

From square to triangle

From the time of the feminization of God or after the dominance of males?

The universe revolves on a chain of madness

Wars wake up and sleep on a buried answer !

Once upon a time, at the beginning of the creation theatre. The Father of the Gods appeared on this primal hill, on which the first features of life appeared. The names of these features were derived from the nature of the place, such as night, darkness, disappearance, and vibration, on this hill an egg of a goose lay, Al Saa’iha al Kobra, and it turned darkness into light.
This first light and first sound that dispelled darkness and signified the earth’s creation from water.
In the middle of it, there was an island called the Flame Island, and on this island, there was a tribe. They followed a religion called Kharanda’ and One of the most important teachings of their religion is “There is no such thing as absolute truth, Everyone is seeking their own”.

These are the only notes that accompany the album entitled "Primal Ocean". Made in 2014 by a mysterious duo from Ramallah called Asnam al masrah, the album offers an electronic excursion into the world of metaphysics and the esoteric. The guarantee of the project is the production of Muqata'a, one of the best and most brilliant artists that the land of Palestine has ever given birth to. Originally released on Soundcloud, the album was re-proposed in 2020 on the bandcamp page of the Palestinian label Meds (Mediteranos), a recent Palestinian musical reality that offers truly obscure but very very interesting experimental projects. The album proposed here (like all the works made by the label) represents an all-round artistic production. It goes beyond the political and social problems of the area and explores spiritual territories of a more universal nature. Upon its release it did not receive the right attention and like many projects born on the web it fell into oblivion. For this reason I decided to dedicate a post to it. In my opinion, this is one of the best projects born in Palestine in the last decades.

Come siamo arrivati?

Yusor Hamed

Yusor Hamed is a young Palestinian singer, musician and producer born in Tunis to a mother originally from Gaza and a father originally from Tulkarem, a Palestinian city located in the northwest of the West Bank on the slopes of the Samaria mountains.

Having moved to Gaza with her family at the age of four, her earliest memories are filled with lazy mornings on the beach and happy afternoons at her grandmother's house. Interested in music since she was a child, Yusor spends entire days following television music programs that broadcast Arabic pop, Western R'n'B and Hip Hop while her parents, who are very permissive and complacent, supply her with cassettes of local artists such as Rim Banna, Nawal El Zoghbi, Najwa Karam and Wael Kfoury.

At the age of seven, given her propensity towards music, she was enrolled at the Edward Said National Conservatory in Ramallah where she began studying Qanun. Due to the work carried out by her parents in the service of the PLO, the entire family, following the electoral victory of the Islamic party in 2006, was forced to move permanently to Ramallah.

The serenity of her domestic life in Gaza, surrounded by her mother's large family, thus gives way to a new reality.

To overcome the situation Yusor seeks solace in music. She dedicates herself with passion to hes studies and develops increasingly complex pieces. Not wanting to limit herself to just Qanun, she begins to practice other instruments such as drums, piano and guitar.

In 2009 she joined the Momken Band, a Palestinian  group made up of young musicians. In this context she has the opportunity to demonstrate her skills as a Qanun player. With  the  Momken Band she released an album entitled “Keif Kan”, composed of nine songs whose lyrics are adaptations of original writings by various contemporary Palestinian poets and writers.

In 2018 she graduated in visual arts from the Palestinian International Academy of Art in Ramallah and moved temporarily to Amman in Jordan to take part in "BalaFeesh", an annual event dedicated to independent music from the Arab world, and to study music production under the guidance of Lebanese producer and musician Zeid Hamdan.

These are the years in which Yusor Hamed develops a completely personal style, creating songs that she publishes on the Soundcloud music platform, in which she mixes European electronics and traditional Arabic instruments with taste and delicacy.

Having returned to Palestine from Jordan with a wealth of experience that has allowed her to hone her talent in the field of electronic music, the Ramallah Rap scene knocks on her door. “Many hip hop artists contacted me to collaborate,” says the young musician, “I wrote choruses and verses. I gained experience working on other people's beats. It taught me so much about songwriting."

She collaborates with various Hip Hop artists, always giving each individual song a recognizable personal contribution. However, her association with the genre represents only one way to explore the depth of her art as her musical vision is absolutely eclectic.

Along with her satisfactions, however, also come the problems, both those within the Palestinian hip hop scene and others linked to her being a woman who sings and performs while the country is in terrible conditions.

In recent years it has become increasingly difficult for musicians to perform in the occupied West Bank, as some of the local population consider it disrespectful to dance and sing while the community is besieged by security forces and settlers.

As a Palestinian woman, Yusor therefore sees her freedom limited not only by walls, checkpoints and army raids, but also by her own community. She has had restrictions imposed on her alike by the Israeli army, the Palestinian Authority and those who argue that women should stay at home and stay away from music. “When I was a teenager I was exposed to the world of men,” she explains, “To the idea that men go out and fight while women have to stay at home, off the streets.”

Many problems also arose in relation to her physical appearance and the depth of her voice. The simple decision to cut her hair short resulted in her being the subject of nasty comments and insinuations about her gender. In reference to these events she states: “At the time I was embracing my masculine energy and wanted to show it. But people didn't want to see it. I felt like I wasn't welcome in this society because I'm different."

Even though she was confident in her abilities, Yusor had to go through a difficult period which led her not to promote her work, thus entering into a serious crisis with herself and with her own identity

The unexpected advent of the pandemic in 2020 offers her the opportunity to take a step back and focus on her music. She makes good use of the lockdown limitations by working on her production skills and perfecting her sound.

She grows her hair and begins to present herself in a way deemed more feminine, yet remains determined to continue to challenge the suffocating stigmas assigned to gender. From the continuous state of tension that has arisen, she has found the strength to continue her career and forge a truly personal path in which music represents an opportunity to be free to express herself and present herself on her own terms, a way to resist boundaries imposed from outside. “Masculinity and femininity are there in my presence” she states “they are in my lyrics, in my voice and in the way I present myself. Now I choose to show both, I am myself."

In 2021 she released a new song entitled “Asil Barri” in collaboration with Maysa Daw (songwriter and member of the group Dam)  , Lina Makoul, Nancy Hawa and Noel Kharman, a song that represents a cry of courage aimed at raising awareness about violence against women in Arab communities.

Yusor dedicates herself to the project with enthusiasm, organizing the communication, taking care of the recordings as well as producing and composing the entire track with Maysa Daw. “It was a difficult responsibility but I didn't feel alone. I felt I had kind and unique people to work with” The success of the single represents an injection of confidence for this young artist who  says: “it raised my vibrations, it made me believe in myself and my creations and made me feel seen from two perspectives: as a singer and as a music producer and composer".

In 2022 she created her first work as a soloist. It's a four-track EP entitled “Tuffah” thematically focused on her life experiences, the difficulties of being part of a people in constant struggle and the limitations resulting from her gender. It is a work full of strength which sees her collaborate again with Maysa Daw in the track of the same name, a slow and melancholy song, at the same time sad and full of hope (a distinctive feature of Yusor Hamed's production), in which the desire is revealed that one day the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea will no longer be fragmented.

The track titled "Minl Jamal Lal Jalal", a tribute to the traditional sound of Palestine saturated with electronic moods, sees her collaborate with Jay Jay, an emerging name in the contemporary Palestinian rap scene. In the remaining songs she makes use of the collaboration of the singer Rasha Nahas, in “Ghanilek” a song about love and loss and of Ahmad Mizro, in the track entitled “Te'rafi Bel Ghaib”.

Brilliant, well-written and well-produced work, confirms Yusor Hamed as one of the most versatile, innovative and exciting artists on the contemporary Palestinian music scene.

Strengthened by the good results obtained from the project, Yusor is moving to take her music outside the regional space. She made contact for a European tour and lent her voice to a song called “Phoenix” by the German group Malaka Hostel.

If leaving national borders represents the right step for the affirmation  of her career however, in reality, for a Palestinian artist, it's an almost obligatory choice. In recent years, many of her concerts have been canceled, sometimes due to national tragedies, sometimes for inexplicable reasons. As a musician residing in the occupied territories, it's impossible for her to perform in Israel and her mode of action is extremely limited. Another deadly side effect of the longest-running occupation in the world which has made the erasure of the Palestinian identity one of its primary objectives.

But temporary exile does not represent an insurmountable problem for this young musician, creator of a stubbornly personal style. “It scares me that I don't have a plan for the future,” says Yusor, “My comfort zone is here, among my people, with my language and my family. It's scary to go into the unknown, but movement is part of being a musician. And I still keep reminding myself that i will always come back."

In riferimento a queste vicende afferma : “All’epoca stavo abbracciando la mia energia maschile e volevo mostrarla.

E continuo comunque  a ricordare a me stessa che tornerò sempre”.
