Yusor Hamed يُسر حامد

 

Yusor Hamed is a young Palestinian singer, musician and producer born in Tunis to a mother originally from Gaza and a father originally from Tulkarem, a Palestinian city located in the northwest of the West Bank on the slopes of the Samaria mountains.

Having moved to Gaza with her family at the age of four, her earliest memories are filled with lazy mornings on the beach and happy afternoons at her grandmother's house. Interested in music since she was a child, Yusor spends entire days following television music programs that broadcast Arabic pop, Western R'n'B and Hip Hop while her parents, who are very permissive and complacent, supply her with cassettes of local artists such as Rim Banna, Nawal El Zoghbi, Najwa Karam and Wael Kfoury. 

At the age of seven, given her propensity towards music, she was enrolled at the Edward Said National Conservatory in Ramallah where she began studying Qanun. Due to the work carried out by her parents in the service of the PLO, the entire family, following the electoral victory of the Islamic party in 2006, was forced to move permanently to Ramallah.

The serenity of her domestic life in Gaza, surrounded by her mother's large family, thus gives way to a new reality.

To overcome the situation Yusor seeks solace in music. She dedicates herself with passion to hes studies and develops increasingly complex pieces. Not wanting to limit herself to just Qanun, she begins to practice other instruments such as drums, piano and guitar. 

 

In 2009 she joined the Momken Band, a Palestinian  group made up of young musicians. In this context she has the opportunity to demonstrate her skills as a Qanun player. With  the  Momken Band she released an album entitled “Keif Kan”, composed of nine songs whose lyrics are adaptations of original writings by various contemporary Palestinian poets and writers. 

In 2018 she graduated in visual arts from the Palestinian International Academy of Art in Ramallah and moved temporarily to Amman in Jordan to take part in "BalaFeesh", an annual event dedicated to independent music from the Arab world, and to study music production under the guidance of Lebanese producer and musician Zeid Hamdan.

These are the years in which Yusor Hamed develops a completely personal style, creating songs that she publishes on the Soundcloud music platform, in which she mixes European electronics and traditional Arabic instruments with taste and delicacy. 

Having returned to Palestine from Jordan with a wealth of experience that has allowed her to hone her talent in the field of electronic music, the Ramallah Rap scene knocks on her door. “Many hip hop artists contacted me to collaborate,” says the young musician, “I wrote choruses and verses. I gained experience working on other people's beats. It taught me so much about songwriting."

She collaborates with various Hip Hop artists, always giving each individual song a recognizable personal contribution. However, her association with the genre represents only one way to explore the depth of her art as her musical vision is absolutely eclectic. 

Along with her satisfactions, however, also come the problems, both those within the Palestinian hip hop scene and others linked to her being a woman who sings and performs while the country is in terrible conditions. 

In recent years it has become increasingly difficult for musicians to perform in the occupied West Bank, as some of the local population consider it disrespectful to dance and sing while the community is besieged by security forces and settlers.

As a Palestinian woman, Yusor therefore sees her freedom limited not only by walls, checkpoints and army raids, but also by her own community. She has had restrictions imposed on her alike by the Israeli army, the Palestinian Authority and those who argue that women should stay at home and stay away from music. “When I was a teenager I was exposed to the world of men,” she explains, “To the idea that men go out and fight while women have to stay at home, off the streets.” 

Many problems also arose in relation to her physical appearance and the depth of her voice. The simple decision to cut her hair short resulted in her being the subject of nasty comments and insinuations about her gender. In reference to these events she states: “At the time I was embracing my masculine energy and wanted to show it. But people didn't want to see it. I felt like I wasn't welcome in this society because I'm different."

Even though she was confident in her abilities, Yusor had to go through a difficult period which led her not to promote her work, thus entering into a serious crisis with herself and with her own identity

The unexpected advent of the pandemic in 2020 offers her the opportunity to take a step back and focus on her music. She makes good use of the lockdown limitations by working on her production skills and perfecting her sound. 

She grows her hair and begins to present herself in a way deemed more feminine, yet remains determined to continue to challenge the suffocating stigmas assigned to gender. From the continuous state of tension that has arisen, she has found the strength to continue her career and forge a truly personal path in which music represents an opportunity to be free to express herself and present herself on her own terms, a way to resist boundaries imposed from outside. “Masculinity and femininity are there in my presence” she states “they are in my lyrics, in my voice and in the way I present myself. Now I choose to show both, I am myself."

In 2021 she released a new song entitled “Asil Barri” in collaboration with Maysa Daw (songwriter and member of the group Dam)  , Lina Makoul, Nancy Hawa and Noel Kharman, a song that represents a cry of courage aimed at raising awareness about violence against women in Arab communities.

Yusor dedicates herself to the project with enthusiasm, organizing the communication, taking care of the recordings as well as producing and composing the entire track with Maysa Daw. “It was a difficult responsibility but I didn't feel alone. I felt I had kind and unique people to work with” The success of the single represents an injection of confidence for this young artist who  says: “it raised my vibrations, it made me believe in myself and my creations and made me feel seen from two perspectives: as a singer and as a music producer and composer".

In 2022 she created her first work as a soloist. It's a four-track EP entitled “Tuffah” thematically focused on her life experiences, the difficulties of being part of a people in constant struggle and the limitations resulting from her gender. It is a work full of strength which sees her collaborate again with Maysa Daw in the track of the same name, a slow and melancholy song, at the same time sad and full of hope (a distinctive feature of Yusor Hamed's production), in which the desire is revealed that one day the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea will no longer be fragmented. 

The track titled "Minl Jamal Lal Jalal", a tribute to the traditional sound of Palestine saturated with electronic moods, sees her collaborate with Jay Jay, an emerging name in the contemporary Palestinian rap scene. In the remaining songs she makes use of the collaboration of the singer Rasha Nahas, in “Ghanilek” a song about love and loss and of Ahmad Mizro, in the track entitled “Te'rafi Bel Ghaib”. 

Brilliant, well-written and well-produced work, confirms Yusor Hamed as one of the most versatile, innovative and exciting artists on the contemporary Palestinian music scene. 

Strengthened by the good results obtained from the project, Yusor is moving to take her music outside the regional space. She made contact for a European tour and lent her voice to a song called “Phoenix” by the German group Malaka Hostel. 

If leaving national borders represents the right step for the affirmation  of her career however, in reality, for a Palestinian artist, it's an almost obligatory choice. In recent years, many of her concerts have been canceled, sometimes due to national tragedies, sometimes for inexplicable reasons. As a musician residing in the occupied territories, it's impossible for her to perform in Israel and her mode of action is extremely limited. Another deadly side effect of the longest-running occupation in the world which has made the erasure of the Palestinian identity one of its primary objectives.

But temporary exile does not represent an insurmountable problem for this young musician, creator of a stubbornly personal style. “It scares me that I don't have a plan for the future,” says Yusor, “My comfort zone is here, among my people, with my language and my family. It's scary to go into the unknown, but movement is part of being a musician. And I still keep reminding myself that i will always come back."

 

Yusor Hamed è una giovane cantante, musicista e produttrice palestinese nata a Tunisi da madre originaria di Gaza e padre originario di Tulkarem, città palestinese situata nel nordovest della Cisgiordania alle pendici delle montagne della Samaria.


Trasferitasi a Gaza con la famiglia all’età di quattro anni, i suoi primi ricordi sono pieni di pigre mattine sulla spiaggia e di pomeriggi felici a casa della nonna.

Interessata alla musica fin da bambina Yusor passa intere giornata a seguire i programmi musicali televisivi che trasmettono pop arabo, R'n'B occidentale e Hip Hop mentre i genitori , molto permissivi e compiacenti, la riforniscono di cassette di artisti locali quali Rim Banna, Nawal El Zoghbi, Najwa Karam e Wael Kfoury.

All’età di sette anni, considerata la sua propensione verso la musica, viene iscritta al Conservatorio Nazionale Edward Said di Ramallah presso il quale inizia lo studio del Qanun.

A causa dell’attività lavorativa svolta dai genitori al servizio dell’ OLP, l’intera famiglia, in seguito alla vittoria elettorale del partito islamico nel 2006, è costretta a trasferirsi a Ramallah in modo definitivo.

La serenità della vita domestica condotta a Gaza, circondata dalla numerosa famiglia della madre, lascia così il posto ad una nuova realtà.

Per superare la situazione Yusor cerca conforto nella musica. Si dedica con passione ai suoi studi ed elabora brani sempre più complessi. Non volendo limitarsi al solo Qanun, comincia ad esercitarsi con altri strumenti quali la batteria, il pianoforte e la chitarra .

Nel 2009 entra a far parte della Momken Band, un gruppo  palestinese composto da giovani musicisti. In questo contesto ha modo di dimostrare le sue abilità come suonatrice di Qanun. Con Il gruppo realizza un album intitolato “Keif Kan”, composto da nove brani i cui testi sono adattamenti di scritti originali di vari poeti e scrittori palestinesi contemporanei.


Nel 2018 si laurea in arti visive presso l'Accademia Internazionale d'Arte Palestinese di Ramallah e si trasferisce temporaneamente ad Amman in Giordania per prendere parte al “BalaFeesh”, un evento annuale dedicato alla musica indipendente del mondo arabo, e per studiare produzione musicale sotto la guida del produttore e musicista libanese Zeid Hamdan.
Sono questi gli anni in cui Yusor Hamed sviluppa uno stile del tutto personale, realizzando brani che pubblica sulla piattaforma musicale Soundcloud, nei quali miscela l'elettronica europea e gli strumenti arabi tradizionali con gusto e delicatezza.

Tornata in Palestina dalla Giordania con un bagaglio di esperienze che le ha permesso di affinare il suo talento nel campo della musica elettronica, la scena Rap di Ramallah bussa alla sua porta. "Molti artisti hip hop mi hanno contattato per collaborare", afferma la giovane musicista, “Scrivevo ritornelli e strofe. Ho fatto esperienza lavorando sui ritmi di altre persone. Mi ha insegnato tantissimo sul come scrivere canzoni”.

 

Collabora con vari artisti Hip Hop dando sempre ai singoli brani un riconoscibile contributo personale. La sua frequentazione con il genere rappresenta però solo un modo per esplorare la profondità della sua arte essendo la sua visione musicale assolutamente eclettica.

Insieme alle soddisfazioni arrivano però anche i problemi, sia quelli interni alla scena hip hop palestinese sia altri legati al suo essere donna che canta e si esibisce mentre il paese versa in condizioni pessime. Negli ultimi anni è diventato sempre più difficile per i musicisti esibirsi nella Cisgiordania occupata, poiché parte della popolazione locale considera irrispettoso ballare e cantare mentre la comunità è assediata da forze di sicurezza e coloni.
In quanto donna palestinese Yusor vede quindi la sua libertà limitata non solo da muri, posti di blocco e raid dell’esercito, ma anche dalla sua stessa comunità. Le sono state imposte limitazioni in egual misura dall’esercito israeliano, dall’Autorità Palestinese e da coloro che sostengono che le donne dovrebbero restare a casa e stare lontane dalla musica. 

"Quando ero adolescente sono stata esposta al mondo degli uomini", spiega, " All’idea che gli uomini escono e combattano mentre le donne devono restare a casa, lontano dalla strada".
Molti problemi si sono manifestati anche in relazione al suo aspetto fisico e alla profondità della sua voce. La semplice decisione di tagliarsi i capelli corti ha fatto si che fosse oggetto di commenti sgradevoli e insinuazioni circa il suo genere. In riferimento a queste vicende afferma : “All’epoca stavo abbracciando la mia energia maschile e volevo mostrarla. Ma la gente non voleva vederlo. Mi sentivo come se non fossi la benvenuta in questa società perché sono diversa”. 

Pur sicura delle proprie capacità Yusor ha dovuto quindi attraversare un difficile periodo che la ha portata a non promuovere il suo lavoro entrando fortemente in crisi con se stessa e con la propria identità.

L’inaspettato avvento della pandemia nel 2020 le offre l’opportunità di fare un passo indietro e concentrarsi sulla propria musica. Sfrutta con profitto le limitazioni derivate dal lockdown lavorando sulle sue capacità di produzione e perfezionando il suo suono. 

Si fa crescere i capelli e inizia a presentarsi in un modo ritenuto più femminile, rimanendo tuttavia determinata a continuare a sfidare gli stigmi soffocanti assegnati al genere. Dal continuo stato di tensione venutosi a creare ha trovato la forza per portare avanti la sua carriera e forgiare un percorso che sia veramente personale nel quale la musica rappresenta un opportunità per essere libera di esprimersi e presentarsi alle sue condizioni, un modo per resistere ai confini imposti dall’esterno. “La mascolinità e la femminilità sono lì alla mia presenza” afferma “sono nei miei testi, nella mia voce e nel modo in cui mi presento. Ora scelgo di mostrarli entrambi, sono me stessa”. 

Nel 2021 pubblica una nuova canzone intitolata  “Asil Barri” in collaborazione con Maysa Daw (cantautrice e membro del gruppo Dam) , Lina Makoul, Nancy Hawa e Noel Kharman,  brano che rappresenta  un grido di coraggio teso ad  aumentare la consapevolezza sulla violenza contro le donne nelle comunità arabe.

Yusor si dedica al progetto con entusiasmo organizzando la comunicazione, curando le registrazioni  oltre a produrre e comporre l'intera traccia con Maysa Daw. “È stata una responsabilità difficile ma non mi sentivo sola. Sentivo di avere persone gentili e uniche con cui lavorare”.
Il successo del singolo rappresenta  un iniezione di fiducia per questa giovane artista  che dice :  “Ha sollevato le mie vibrazioni, mi ha fatto credere in me stessa e nelle mie creazioni e mi ha fatto sentire vista Da due prospettive: come cantante e come produttore musicale e compositore”.  

Nel 2022 realizza il suo primo lavoro come solista. Si tratta di un EP di quattro tracce intitolato “ Tuffah”  incentrato a livello tematico sulle sue esperienze di vita, sulle difficoltà di essere parte di un popolo in continua lotta  e sulle  limitazioni derivate dal suo genere.

Si tratta di un lavoro ricco di forza che la vede collaborare nuovamente con Maysa Daw nella traccia omonima, una canzone lenta e malinconica, allo stesso tempo triste e carica di speranza ( tratto distintivo della produzione di Yusor Hamed), nella quale si palesa il desiderio che un giorno  la terra tra il fiume Giordano e il Mar Mediterraneo non sia più frammentata.  
La traccia intitolata "Minl Jamal Lal Jalal", un omaggio al suono tradizionale della Palestina  saturo di umori elettronici,  la vede collaborare con con Jay Jay, nome emergente  della scena rap palestinese contemporanea.  
Nei rimanenti brani si avvale della collaborazione della cantante Rasha Nahas, in “Ghanilek”  una canzone sull'amore e la perdita e di Ahmad Mizro, nella traccia intitolata “Te'rafi Bel Ghaib”.

Lavoro brillante, ben scritto e ben realizzato, conferma  Yusor  Hamed come una tra gli artisti più versatili, innovativi ed entusiasmanti della  scena musicale  palestinese contemporanea.
Forte dei buoni risultati ottenuti dal progetto, Yusor si sta muovendo per portare la sua musica al di fuori dello spazio regionale. Ha preso contatti per un tour europeo e ha prestato la sua voce in un brano intitolato “Phoenix” del gruppo tedesco  Malaka Hostel.

Se l’uscita dai confini nazionali rappresenta il giusto passo per l’affermazione della propria carriera è pero nei fatti, per un artista palestinese, una scelta quasi obbligata.

Negli ultimi anni, molti dei suoi concerti sono stati cancellati, a volte a causa di tragedie nazionali, a volte per ragioni inspiegabili. In quanto musicista residente nei territori occupati le è impossibile potersi esibire in Israele e la sua modalità di azione risulta estremamente limitata. Un altro esiziale effetto collaterale dell’occupazione più longeva del mondo che ha fatto della cancellazione dell’identità palestinese uno dei suoi obiettivi primari.

Ma l’esilio temporaneo non rappresenta un problema insormontabile per questa giovane musicista creatrice di uno stile testardamente personale.

"Mi spaventa il fatto di non avere un piano per il futuro", dice Yusor ,  “La mia comfort zone è qui, tra la mia gente, con la mia lingua e la mia famiglia. È spaventoso andare verso l'ignoto, ma il movimento è parte dell'essere un musicista. E continuo comunque  a ricordare a me stessa che tornerò sempre”.
