Jamal Eddien Toufaha (later known under the stage name of Mohammed Jamal) is a Lebanese singer and actor born in Tripoli on May 24, 1934 (some sources indicate instead 11 October)

Following the transfer of his family to Beirut, Mohammed Jamal began attending the schools of the capital. He approaches the study of the Oud under the guidance of his father and begins to sing by performing the songs of the famous singers of the time. His first singing performances took place in his sister's companies but she decided not to continue her artistic career. In 1954 he had the opportunity to show off his talent at the Lebanese national radio and in 1956 he moved to Cairo, the nerve center of the music and cinema industry of the Arab world. He is immediately hired for what will be his first film work, the film "Al Armala al turub" (The Merry Widow) by director Helmi Rafla.

In Cairo he met and fell in love with the singer Taroub, who was also an expatriate in search of success. The young singers decide to get married and give life to a very successful musical duo that will be called Jamal Al-Taroub. The partnership will last from 1957 to 1964. In 1957 the couple became known throughout the Arab world thanks to the song "Qoul Kaman", followed by other successful songs that lead the duo to obtain an undisputed reputation.

Young and good looking they participate in various films (both solo and as a couple) among which we must remember "Nisa'a al shita" "of 1961 in the company of the Egyptian actress Souad Hosny and the belly dancer Nagwa Fouad.

After 7 years the association ends up due, they say, of the jealousy that Mohammed jamal tries against the male fans of his wife, to this must be added a certain flirtatious attitude of the singer who did not disdain avance and flirt occasional (much talked was her alleged relationship with the singer Abdel Halim Hafez).

The streets of the two artists are divided even if Mohammed Jamal continues for a while to support the former partner by giving her new songs.

The career of Mohammed jamal continues in the field of music and cinema. He took part in several films and television series throughout the '70s, including the series for children "Iftah ya Sesame" (open sesame) and the famous Lebanese TV program "Sa'a We Ghiniyeh", also makes albums like soloist and composes songs that will be interpreted by singers such as Sabah, Najah Sallam, Widad and the Syrian singer Marwan Housam.

Among the albums produced during the '70s, it is worth mentioning the very successful "Al dounia hubb" which is a summa of the composer's compositional inspiration, permeated by different cultural influences, the mother was of Greek origin while his father was a native of Nablus in Palestine (some sources indicate Haifa) and the danceable "Doroub El Hawa" composed of dance tracks of Western inspiration that will be discovered today as examples of Arab Funk (Sic).

At the outbreak of the Lebanese civil war in 1981 Mohammed Jamal moved to the United States in Los Angeles where he opened a falafel restaurant called "Byblos". He continues to sing performing for the expatriate Lebanese community.
He remarries a Syrian woman with whom he has two children and leads a peaceful life in California.
In 1986 he opened a new restaurant called "Barada" in honor of the Syrian River.

In the mid-90s he returned to Beirut invited for an exhibition, re-establishing a new and lasting contact with his mother country.

He will meet after years his ex-wife Taroub invited to a Lebanese television program in 2009 during which the singer Eileen Khalaf will perform their old hit "Badee Shoufak Kil Yaoum (Ya Habibi)".

Taroub

Taroub (real name: Amal Ismael Kharkiss) is a singer and actress born June 1, 1938 (in 1937, according to some sources). Although she is considered a Lebanese singer her origins belong to other places. Her is in fact a family of Circassian origin who has settled in Syria in the early 1800s to escape the conflict raging in the region. She grew up in Damascus, was followed in her musical studies from the mother Khaleda Zadeh, discreet Oud player , who gave her a hearing during the early '50s at the Cinema Theatre in Al-Nasr headed by Abdel-Hadi Bakkar. She was noticed by Adel Abu Shanab who invited her to join the choir Radio Damascus in 1955.

In the second half of the '50s she meets by chance Mohammed Jamal, Lebanese singer and composer of Palestinian origin, with which will give birth to a brotherhood of love (they married in 1957) and then musical. The duo, known by the name of Jamal al Taroub, will produce a successful series of songs that will become famous all over the Arab world. These are the years of what will be called "United Arab Republic", the political and cultural union settled between Syria and Egypt. Taroub will take an active part in this initiative and travels to Cairo in a cultural exchange project. With her husband Jamal appears in various movies of Egyptian industry film that decreed the success of the couple under a truly captivating stage presence, handsome green-eyed him and sexy girl with golden curls her.

The couple's partnership ends in divorce occurred in 1964. Mohammad Jamal resented the attention received by Taroub by its masculine fans. Add to this a certain frivolity of the singer which were attributed different flirt (among the most egregious ones with Farid Al-Atrache and Abdel-Halim Hafez) and it is understandable the jealousy that gripped her husband.

Artistically the fact creates many problems for Taroub that depends, as far as the writing of the songs, from her husband. Mohammad Jamal as a farewell gesture gives to the ex-wife three songs, including "Al-Kournish" which will be taken up successfully by Farid Al-Atrache.

The career of the singer goes on in the world of film and music. Her presence vaguely flirtatious makes it suitable for various films (Lebanese and Syrian) that may be reported under the categories of sexploitation, humorous comedies and vaguely erotic. She continues her success and in 1973 released her solo album titled simply "Taroub". For all the 70 Taroub produces songs from different backgrounds that have consolidated her fame among the public.

All that remains almost never permanently in place.

After the Yom Kippur War in 1973 she left Egypt and moved to Lebanon. Leave Lebanon for the United States at the beginning of the civil war in the early 80s. Following several peregrinations between Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon, she unravels all her belongings in lebanon and will move permanently in a residential neighborhood on the outskirts of Cairo, having become too competitive the Lebanese music scene and populated by new divas on the rise.
In the early 90s she will retire from the scene and arouse huge stir when near the end of the millennium will choose to wear the 'hijab' (Islamic veil).

A comprehensive history of the Jamal / Taroub torque can be found at the beautiful blog the audiotopia.

Here you can find a part of the filmography of Taroub.

The discs contained in this post examine the only solo career of Taroub
