G - Town The Palestinian Hip Hop Makers جي - تاون

Since the first beginning of Hip-Hop culture spread in Palestine, Muhammad Mughrabi from Shoufat Refugee Camp in Palestine's occupied capital Jerusalem, was fond of this culture that is being terribly spreading in all over the world. He waited for years to see someone who is expressing what he is feeling about a Refugee, Here in 2002 he decided to launch his Hip-Hop band which was named G-Town (G from Ghetto). the G-Town includes also Fadi Ammous. The two Refugees together spoke out the first Hip-Hop word in Jerusalem and played its first beat. Their first album "Darrdakeh" was released in 2007 to reflect what is the feeling of being a refugee, To reflect what they feel toward themselves, their homeland "Palestine", their enemy, the world, and the Middle East. "Sharq Awsat Jadeed" or New Middle East was one of their most famous songs that was widely known all over the world. G- Town band can be taken as a great example of the success of the Hip hop culture in Palestine as its members have participated in many international festivals and tours, never to fail mentioning getting a MTV award, beside producing video shows, and taking parts in documentary films, composing music, and having the privilege of making soundtrack for an academy award (Oscar) nominated film.

Gruppo proveniente da Shoufat,il campo profughi di Gerusalemme Est, composto da Mohammed Mughrabi, Alaa, Mohamed Abu Oun, Nasreen e Fadi Abu Amos. Il gruppo è stato fondato da Mohammed Mughrabi, nato durante la prima Intifada, in seguito all’aggressione israeliana al Libano. La prima produzione è rappresentata dalla canzone “Sharq Awsat Jadeed” (“Nuovo Medio Oriente”) e ha ottenuto da subito vasti consensi a livello mondiale. Mohammed Mughrabi e il suo amico Alaa, grandi appassionati di hip-hop occidentale, aspettavano il momento in cui qualcuno cominciasse a cantare il dolore e la frustrazione di chi ha vissuto una vita da rifugiato. Hanno scoperto l’esistenza di una scena rap palestinese grazie a gruppi come Dam e Mwr e deciso di dare vita alla loro crew scegliendosi il nome di G-Town, dove la G sta per ghetto. La condizione dei rifugiati, la Palestina e Israele, il suo occupante, la libertà e la situazione di Gerusalemme sono i temi ricorrenti nei loro pezzi. Si sono immediatamente fatti un nome grazie a brani molto incisivi, come il già citato “Sharq Awsat Jadeed”, “القدس لنا – Al Quds Lana” e “Roads”. Nel 2007 è uscito il loro primo album intitolato “دردكه –Darrdakeh”. Nel 2009 sono stati invitati, insieme con la cantante Shadia Mansur e l’artista Ammar Hassan, alle celebrazioni per i 60 anni dell’organizzazione Unrwa delle Nazioni Unite per il soccorso e l’occupazione. Nel 2009 i registi italiani Luca Cusani e Francesco Cannito hanno scelto Mohammed Mughrabi come protagonista del loro documentario intitolato “Shooting Muhammad”. Il film, sceneggiato da Michela Sechi giornalista di Radio Popolare, è basato sulla vera storia di Mohammed Mughrabi leader del gruppo,   unico studente arabo del suo corso di laurea all’interno di un’università situata in una colonia israeliana. Un ragazzo schiacciato tra due mondi che si temono e odiano a vicenda. Allo stato attuale la crew G-Town è un nome di primo piano della scena rap palestinese.

“In my class there are 13 students and half of them are very religious settlers and they hate me, or you can say that they don't like me”.
Imagine being a 21-year-old Palestinian refugee. Imagine taking the bus every morning to go to an Israeli settlement in the West Bank to study at an Israeli University where you are the only Arab student in the department.
This is the story of a young man split between two worlds that fear and hate each other. This is Muhammad’s story.
