Souad Hajji

Souad Hajji was a Moroccan singer born in Fez at the end of the 30s. She was part of the renewal of Moroccan music of Arab inspiration that began in the late 50s.

Despite other great innovators of Moroccan music, her contemporaries, her musical heritage and history have been overshadowed and very little is known about her. With this post I would like to mention herwork with the little that is available.

In 1957 the Moroccan national radio announced a competition with the aim of discovering new female talents destined to participate in its variety programs. The project was part of a grandiose plan that the direction of the radio had undertaken to renew Moroccan music. A large national symphonic orchestra was created, composed of the best musicians recruited, through a competition, among the various regional stations. The composers, set to work by the radio station, soon found a new musical style, modern and captivating, but the female voices were scarce and there was no one who could interpret the new composed melodies.

Souad Hajji, an eighteen-year-old girl from Fez, came forward among the young voices who dared to face this challenge. Married to Mohamed Laghmari, a comedian from the Fez regional station who ran a theatrical troupe called "Houat Al Masarh". Souad was known within the group of her husband as "Umm Kulthum al Maghrebiyya", such was the beauty of her voice.

The husband urged her to take part in the competition, even though she was the mother of three children, convinced that she was one of the best singers in circulation and that through her voice she could make a great contribution to the renewal of Moroccan music. It will not be wrong. In fact, Souad will present herself at the audition and win first place.

Following this, she was forced to move to Rabat, the capital, a place where all the participants in the project were gathered to make this singer still unknown, one of the stars of the national song.

The various composers set to work. These included Belaid Essoussi, Brahim Elalami, Aderrahim Essakat and Abdelwahab Agoumi. The latter, director of the conservatory and singer of great fame, made available a large orchestra composed of the students and teachers of the conservatory to interpret the songs he wrote for Souad.

Life began to become frenetic: rehearsals, recordings, public gala and television participations. It was far too much for a young girl who lived her life in a hotel with her three children. Following a project to decentralize the station's artistic activity, Souad moved to work at the Casablanca site, a location that she will never leave and where she will participate as a regular guest on two television programs a month and a weekly radio program, intensifying her work rate.

In Casablanca she will begin to publish her first records. Her first major success will be the song "Sir Allah Yehdik" composed by the musician Mustapha Amal. This will be followed by another 15 successes that will range between different genres and which will be composed by the greatest Moroccan musicians.

In 1964 she will undertake a great tour with the musician Abelwahab Doukkali who will introduce her music to Algeria. The public of Orano, enthused by her performances, will adopt she as its own darling. This will be followed by a tour with the Moroccan singer Abdelhadi Belkhayat and a tour with the Algerian singer Rabah Driassa. Souad Hajji will now return to Algeria every year to sing in what has become her adopted homeland.

In 1967 she will perform for six months at the Moroccan pavilion at the Universal Exhibition in Montreal, Canada. In 1968 she left for the European continent. In Paris her French tour debuts, which will take her to all regions of the nation to the delight of the many emigrant compatriots. She will perform over the years in Belgium, Germany and New York always receiving great success.

I vari compositori si misero all’opera.

A Casablanca comincerà a pubblicare i suoi primi dischi.
