The Orchestra Omar project is the brainchild of Lebanese musician Charbel Haber, a leading figure on the experimental music scene in the Middle East. The orchestra, made up of seven guitars and a bass, aims to rework the musical work of Omar Khorshid, one of the most famous guitarists in the Egyptian music scene of the 70s.
The line up of the project includes: Osman Arabi,Umut Caglar, Maurice Louca, Sam Shalabi ,Sharif Sehnaoui ,Fadi Tabbal , Tony Elieh and Charbel Haber himself, all musicians whose curriculum is a guarantee of artistic reliability. If the majority of these names say nothing, it is about the best that the experimental music scene in the Levantine area has to offer.
The project resulted in an album, printed in limited edition in 2015 by the Italian label Sagittarius A-Star which develops through three quite heterogeneous tracks.
Each piece consists of an essentially repetitive basis to which different themes are added by the project participants who elaborate phrases according to their own sensitivity and personal baggage. Highly rhythmic and hypnotic compositions are created that drag the listener on a real journey. The project represents an absolute novelty for the Middle Eastern music scene and could be approached, if one wanted to draw a parallelism, to the guitar experiments of Glenn Branca, the American composer who during the 80's revolutionized the approach to the use of electric guitar.
The presence of seven guitars could give rise to a sort of uncontrolled chaos, but the compositions develop in a very orderly and controlled way, presenting barely perceptible solos, arpeggios of clear oriental origin and pounding chords, and we can say that we are in the presence of a absolutely successful project that opens the way to a new way of understanding oriental music.
The decision to print the album in a few copies has meant that the availability of the same has now become quite difficult.

Il progetto Orchestra Omar nasce da un idea del musicista libanese Charbel Haber, personalità di spicco della scena musicale sperimentale del Medio Oriente. L’orchestra, formata da sette chitarre ed un basso, si propone di rielaborare il percorso musicale di Omar Khorshid, uno tra i chitarristi più noti nel panorama musicale egiziano degli anni 70.
La line Up del progetto comprende : Osman Arabi,Umut Caglar, Maurice Louca, Sam Shalabi ,Sharif Sehnaoui ,Fadi Tabbal , Tony Elieh e lo stesso Charbel Haber, tutti personaggi il cui curriculum musicale è garanzia di affidabilità artistica. Se ai più questi nomi non dicono nulla , si tratta di quanto di meglio possa offrire la scena musicale sperimentale dell’area levantina.
Il progetto si è concretizzato in un album, stampato in edizione limitata nel 2015 dall’etichetta italiana Sagittarius A-Star, che si sviluppa attraverso tre brani abbastanza eterogenei. Ogni brano consta di una base essenzialmente ripetitiva alla quale si aggiungono man mano temi differenti ad opera dei diversi partecipanti al progetto che elaborano fraseggi a seconda della propria sensibilità e del proprio bagaglio personale. Si vengono a creare composizioni altamente ritmate ed ipnotiche che trascinano chi ascolta in un vero e proprio viaggio . Il progetto rappresenta una novità assoluta per la scena musicale medio orientale e potrebbe essere accostato, se si volesse a forza tracciare un parallelismo, alle sperimentazioni chitarristiche di Glenn Branca, il compositore americano che nel corso degli anni 80 rivoluzionò l’approccio all’uso della chitarra elettrica.
La presenza di sette chitarre potrebbe dare vita ad una sorta di caos incontrollato, invece le composizioni si sviluppano in modo molto ordinato e lineare alternando assoli accennati, arpeggi di chiara origine orientale e accordi martellanti e si può dire che ci si trova al cospetto di un progetto assolutamente riuscito che apre la strada ad un nuovo modo di intendere la musica orientale .
La scelta di stampare l’album in poche copie ha fatto si che la reperibilità dello stesso sia divenuta attualmente abbastanza difficile.
