Yazz Ahmed

Yazz Ahmed is a British-Bahraini trumpeter, flugelhornist, and composer born in London in 1983. The daughter of an English dancer and a Bahraini engineer, she spent her childhood in her father's country until the age of nine. Although she retains happy memories of her childhood, she remembers the particular restrictions and inevitable fears that followed the outbreak of the Gulf War in the early 1990s.

In 1992, she moved to London with her mother and sisters, but at first she struggled to adapt to her new situation. Recalling those years, she says: "I felt like it wasn't my home, and I didn't understand why. For a long time, I lied about my origins because of how Arabs and Muslims were portrayed in American films and British TV series. When I was at school, I never said I was half Bahraini."

At her new English school, she was given the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument, and she chose the trumpet.

Her maternal grandfather, Terry Brown, a successful jazz trumpeter in the 1950s, was a true role model for her, and his influence would play a fundamental role in his young granddaughter's musical destiny.

It was Terry Brown who gave her the first trumpet lesson and introduced her to jazz music through listening to giants of the genre such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Tubby Hayes, and Jimmy Deuchar. This, along with the reggae and classical music her mother listened to, would influence her growth.

After completing her standard studies, hopelessly in love with jazz music, she decided to enroll in a music degree at Kingston University. She worked hard to improve her knowledge of jazz and her playing, dreaming of one day entering a music academy. Her hard work paid off, and she received a scholarship to study for a Masters in Jazz at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she would be mentored by renowned jazz teacher Nick Smart.

During these formative years, filled with excitement and satisfaction, Yazz Ahmed began to develop a desire to find her own musical path that would distinguish her both as a woman and as a musician. A path that would fully represent her in all her cultural and human richness.

"In my twenties, I realized there weren't many female jazz musicians around. I felt a little strange, I was starting to feel quite alone; I had no one to look up to, to aspire to, or anyone to encourage me. I found a Canadian trumpet player named Ingrid Jensen, who really made a difference in my approach to the trumpet and in my drive to become a jazz trumpet player. She gave me hope that women could become professional jazz trumpet players rather than just singers."

Upon completing her Master's degree, she formed her first band and intensified the search for her true voice. This journey reconnected her with her Bahraini roots and the music of her childhood. Listening to Oud player Rabih Abu Khalil’s album “Blue Camel” changes her perspective on Jazz and allows her to develop a musical language more in tune with her growing sense of identity.

“The music of ‘Blue Camel’ spoke to me on a subconscious level. Here were the sounds and flavors of music that, as a child in Bahrain, had deeply penetrated my psyche, but now they merged with the jazz disciplines I had studied for so long. Something clicked, and I felt compelled to explore this new world.”

Her musical talents and her work began to attract musicians outside the jazz world. Joan As Police Woman, Radiohead, and These New Puritans requested her collaborations, which further enriched her musical repertoire. The opportunity to perform and record in the fields of rock, ambient music, and sound design introduced her to the use of technology and the studio as a compositional tool, leading her to discover a new, highly personal sound.

This is the sound the artist presents in her first album under her own name. The album "Finding My Way Home" was released in 2001 and alternates songs inspired by Western jazz with Middle Eastern influences. The album ends with the title track, "Finding My Way Home," which perfectly captures the souls that make up this talented musician's identity. An excellent debut, the album received acclaim, but its reach remained limited to the jazz scene. It was with her next album that Yazz Ahmed's name truly established itself on the global music scene.

Published six years after its predecessor, "La Saboteuse" was released in 2017 on the Naim Jazz label. The album immediately stands out aesthetically with its beautiful artwork by talented illustrator Sophie Bass; the vinyl edition is a true work of art.

Musically, the album continues the artist's exploration of the music of Middle Eastern origins, fused with jazz harmony, improvisation, and the possibilities offered by new technologies. It reflects Yazz Ahmed's research process and the influence of musical discoveries born from collaborations with other artists in different musical fields. The Arabic component emerges most strongly in this work, which, at a profound level, is built more on maqam than on blues.

To create the album, she relied on a highly experienced team that included Lewis Wright on vibraphone, Shabaka Hutchings on bass clarinet, Naadia Sherriff on Fender Rhodes keyboards, Dave Manington on bass, Samuel Hällkvist on guitar, and Corrina Silvester on percussion—a team that has become a true family.

For some tracks, the musician used a quarter-tone flugelhorn, a very special instrument custom-built for her. The underlying idea was to reach what she calls the "blue notes" of Arabic music. "They're the emotional notes. They're very reminiscent of our voices when we sing and express our feelings; those notes are very deep within us, in the human soul. I love those notes. It's just another way of being expressive and telling a story." Regarding the deeper content of this new work, Yazz Ahmed says: “On a spiritual level, the music explores the relationship between my conscious self and my inner saboteur, the voice of my self-destructive inclinations and the demons we have all experienced in our lives.”

In August 2018, she released an EP titled "La Saboteuse Remixed," featuring four tracks from the album remixed by Hector Plimmer, DJ Khalab, and Blacksea Não Maya. This was a successful artistic venture, aimed at bringing her music to a wider audience.

2019 will be a very fruitful year for this brilliant musician. A single-sided 12-inch single, "A Shoal of Souls," is released, marking a new chapter in Yazz Ahmed's ever-evolving creative process. For this album, the musician once again relied on illustrator Sophie Bass for the artwork.

Sophie Bass will also be responsible for the artwork for the musician's new full-length work. Titled "Polyhymnia," a reference to the Greek goddess of orchestral performance, pantomime, and dance, the album is a concept album composed of six tracks, each inspired by a specific female figure. According to the author, it is "a celebration of female courage, determination, and creativity."

The female figures in question are: Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai; Rosa Parks, a black rights activist (her refusal to give up her seat on a bus to a white person sparked one of the largest protests in American memory); and filmmaker Saudi Arabian Haifaa al-Mansour, civil rights activist Ruby Bridges, saxophonist Barbara Thompson, and the Suffragettes.

For this new album, Yazz Ahmed uses a full-fledged 13-piece orchestral ensemble. Musically, she continues her research, developing an increasingly mature and personal sound that confirms her as one of the most original and creative voices in contemporary jazz.

A remix version of this new work will also be made.

The years following the release of "Polyhymnia" were filled with great success and saw the artist perform in numerous concerts around the world.

In 2025, six years after its predecessor, she released an electrifying new album. Titled "A Paradise in the Hold," the new work sees the musician delve deeper into her roots, drawing on traditional Bahraini music and family memories. The project's cornerstones are the exploration, definition, acceptance, and celebration of her cultural identity.

She states: "If my first album, 2011's "Finding My Way Home," represented the first steps on this journey, with "A Paradise in the Hold" I came to a deeper understanding of how my British and Bahraini roots can coexist, both personally and musically."

Unlike her previous albums, this new work is composed not only of instrumental tracks but also features vocals. Yazz Ahmed writes most of   lyrics, drawing inspiration from Bahraini wedding poems and reworking the ancient, poignant songs of pearl divers.

Vocal contributions for the occasion include Brigitte Beraha, Natacha Atlas, Alba Nacinovich, and soul-jazz singer Randolph Matthews. In the song "Into the Night," a celebration of female independence, the voice of the musician's father can be heard.

A bold and visceral album, "A Paradise in the Hold" brings to life the vision of its author, who offers a mature, original, and extremely personal sound. Yazz Ahmed has certainly, if not revolutionized, at least innovated the way her instrument is played and can be counted among the finest artists of our time.

Freh Khodja

Freh Kodja is an Algerian musician born on January 12, 1949, in Sidi Bel Abbès, a city founded by the French in northwestern Algeria, which for several years served as the headquarters and symbolic city of the French Foreign Legion.

Son of Khodja Benhadri Berraho, a great poet from Melhoun, he developed an early passion for music, so much so that at the age of eight he attempted to build a guitar entirely on his own.

His grandmother, a percussionist belonging to the medahates circuit, female vocal groups that perform at weddings, baptisms, and religious vigils, encouraged him to pursue an artistic career. He then began studying saxophone and music theory at the Sidi Bel Abbès Conservatory. After two years of studies, he joined the Jaguars, a local group that performed at small family celebrations, weddings, and cultural activities organized by the municipality.

In 1968, he moved to Paris to continue his education at the École Normale de Musique. In France, he continued his musical apprenticeship as a saxophonist in Morgan's Band, while also experiencing the difficult reality of being an immigrant in the heart of the nation that had long been the colonial oppressor of his homeland.

His search for a personal style led him to experiment with Arabic-language singing in modern and original compositions rich in groove, influenced by jazz and funk. This spirit of exploration led him to meet "Les Flammes," a Parisian band formed in 1972 composed of immigrant musicians from Cape Verde and Portugal.

With "Les Flammes," he released his first album in 1975, titled "Ken Andi Habib." Released by the Algerian label La Voix Du Globe, this debut album presents a compelling fusion of North African melodies, jazz, funk, Caribbean moods, and Cape Verdean sounds, reflecting the city's diverse cosmopolitan scene during the 1970s. The album, distributed primarily in Algeria and France among North African immigrant communities, received little attention upon its release, although its value was subsequently recognized by many, making it highly sought-after by collectors and DJs. After this work, Freh Khodja continued his musical journey with other solo albums, which brought him good visibility and excellent recognition until the second half of the 1980s.

In 1987, he participated in the 2nd Mediterranean Song Festival in Antalya, Turkey, with the song "Houria." Unfortunately, what was supposed to be international recognition turned out to be a source of bitterness and frustration. Algeria, his native country, tried every means to boycott his participation, considering him a traitorous immigrant. The two Algerian emissaries, by their own admission, attended the festival solely to sabotage their compatriot. This gesture remains incomprehensible to the musician to this day.

Although he continues to live in France, Freh Khodja has never severed ties with Algeria and has returned regularly to Sidi Bel Abbès over the years. By the late 1980s, his name had virtually disappeared from the spotlight, although he remains active to this day as both a songwriter and arranger.

Completely ignored by the Algerian Ministry of Culture, he has never had the opportunity to perform in his home country. Given his countless productions in Europe, his arrangements for international artists, and his compositions for soundtracks and plays, he could have contributed more to Algerian music, giving it an international reach. This unwarranted exclusion remains one of his greatest regrets.

His name has recently returned to the spotlight thanks to a rediscovery campaign by several European labels. In 2017, the song "La Coladera" appeared on the album "An Eclectic Selection of Music from the Arab World" released by the German label Habibi Funk, and in 2025, the French label Wewantsounds commendably reissued "Ken Andi Habib," his 1975 debut album, on vinyl. As is his custom, it retains the original artwork and includes a booklet written by North African music specialist Rabah Mezouane, which places Khodja's work within the broader context of the musical innovation of North African artists in France during the 1970s.

Natik Awayez

Natik Awayez is a composer and oud player born near the mouths of the Tigris and Euphrates in Iraq. Raised between Amarah (a town in south-eastern Iraq) and Baghdad, he was introduced to the study of the Oud by local musicians. Interested in studying and composing, he began to attend musical events, read a lot, and above all listen a lot. With the intensification of political persecution in Iraq, he decided to move to Bulgaria in 1979 to study philosophy and deepen his knowledge of Bulgarian music.

About those years he will say: "Going to Bulgaria at a very young age was fantastic, a new energetic freedom exploded inside me after the social conditions in Iraq. Bulgarian music is very distinct and has undergone many cultural changes over the centuries. It is difficult to live in Bulgaria without being influenced by its music". After completing his studies in philosophy, some of Awayez's Yemeni friends suggested that he go and find work in their country. The opportunity was too good to pass up and so in 1981 he moved to Aden. The discovery of the Yemeni musical approach, full of magic and built on highly complex rhythms, represented, as Awayez himself states, "a positively violent shock" that completely overturned his perception of music.

After 18 months spent in Aden, he moved to the desert area of Beihan on the border with Saudi Arabia. In the city of Abyan he founded and led the "Asheed Band" for a few years and collaborated with the "Zinjibar City Band" as a composer and artistic supervisor. Working with local musicians allowed him to refine his compositional skills and expand his knowledge of the Oud. The outbreak of the civil war in Yemen in 1986 forced him to migrate again, this time to Sweden, where he lived permanently until 2014.

In Lund, Awayez founded “Natik City”, a band that involved some members of the Swedish group “Agurk Players”. In Malmo, he co-founded the project “Shahrazad” in collaboration with the Swedish string quartet “Amanda kvartetten”. In 2013, he founded “The Art Consulate”, an independent organization that works to create an intellectual dialogue between Europe and the Middle East. This new occupation led him to go to Cairo in 2015 to follow and manage an artistic project entitled “Missing Rooms”. Once the work was completed, Natik Awayez decided to stay in Cairo with the aim of making music and dedicating himself to composing an album.

In the Egyptian capital he begins to establish contacts with the city's music scene and establishes a collaborative relationship with Maurice Louca, an experimental musician who is the protagonist of the most innovative and brilliant musical projects born in the area in the last twenty years.

Thus in 2021 "Manbarani" sees the light, Natik Awayez's debut album, published by the American label Sublime Frequencies, produced by Maurice Louca. The album is composed of eight original songs that present a contemporary reinterpretation of the musical folklore of the Arab world. The rhythmic arrangements of the Lebanese percussionist Khaled Yassine represent the foundation of the entire work created with the help of the most famous contemporary Arab instrumentalists. The ensemble of stringed instruments that includes oud, violin and buzuq weaves melodic compositions and solo explorations on which the voice of Natik Awayez is grafted, transporting the listener on a physical and spiritual journey (or more correctly an exodus).

Among the musicians who took part in the project we find the Palestinian Tamer Abu Ghazaleh, the Egyptian singer-songwriter Maryam Saleh, Aya Hemeda and Adham Zidan of the Egyptian group “The Invisible Hands”, the Lebanese percussionist Khaled Yassine and the Egyptian violinist Ayman Asfour, who has already collaborated with Maurice Louca in his solo projects.

Each individual musician contributed to the creation of the album with their own character and ideas under the guidance of a production that highlighted the musical ideas and emotional expressions already present, avoiding overshadowing songs that were already born beautiful.

The fruit of physical and cultural wanderings, “Manbarani” represents a musical hybrid of great beauty whose genesis is explained by its author as follows: “Iraq is the source and Yemen is the soul. As for Cairo, it offered me fragments of time, a small home, a handful of its most beautiful musicians and so much love”.

Dina El Wedidi

Dina El Wedidi is an Egyptian singer, composer, guitarist, music producer and storyteller born on October 1, 1987 in the Giza district. She studied literature and oriental languages at Cairo University where she graduated in 2008, specializing in Turkish and Persian literature.

At the age of 19, while still attending courses, she joined the theater company "El Warsha" thus discovering her passion for music. Followed by her tutor, the musician Maged Soliman, she began to explore the potential of her voice by deepening her knowledge of the traditional Egyptian heritage. A true training ground for her experience was her participation in the work of the band "Habayebna", founded by Soliman himself.

To refine her talent, she takes part in many musical workshops and training courses, both national and international, which allow her to come into contact with important figures of the world music scene such as the pioneer of the oriental jazz scene Fathy Salama and the Palestinian experimental musician Kamilya Jubran. All this contributes to developing her background, puts her in contact with different sounds and enriches her musical culture.

The outbreak of the Egyptian revolution in 2011 causes Dina to dedicate herself together with the Egyptian band Masar Egbari and other collaborators to the creation of the modern operetta “ Khalina Nehlam “ ('Let's Dream'). The project has an excellent response and represents one of the most vital and creative moments of that particular historical period.

In 2012 her artistic career took off. She was admitted to the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, a philanthropic project of the famous Swiss watchmaker, under the guidance of Gilberto Gil. With the famous Brazilian singer she began a very intense relationship both on a human and professional level that led her to perform at music festivals all over the world.

An eclectic artist very close to social and environmental issues, Dina El Wedidi in 2013 joined the "Nile Project", a musical and environmental initiative that brings together musicians and thinkers from all over the Nile Valley. With the "Nile Project" she made two albums "Aswan" in 2013 and "Jinja" in 2017.

Also in 2013 her long-awaited solo work was released, entitled "Tedwar Wa Terga'" (Turning Back). If the cultural heritage and the streets of Egypt and its capital are a great source of inspiration, the album in question condenses, from a musical point of view, all the life and musical experiences accumulated over the years.

Assisted in this project by a team of excellent musicians (including violinist Nancy Mounir and bassist Miles Jay, co-producers of the album), Dina El-Wedidi blends folklore with experimentation to create music that is familiar to the Egyptian audience, while expressing a global artistic vision.

The good feedback obtained allows her to acquire esteem and notoriety on the international scene. The time span that goes from the creation of her first album to 2018 sees the artist tending to a deliberate separation from the image that has defined her in the mind of her audience and a re-evaluation of herself on a creative level.

Temporarily putting aside all her traditional cultural baggage, Dina el Wedidi began to take an interest in more electronic sounds, developing a deep attraction for sampled sounds.

When a friend, who was working on a website, archiving the sounds of the Egyptian railways, discovered Dina's interest in production and sampling, he immediately asked her to join him in collecting field recordings. Thus began a project that would keep her busy for a few years and that would materialize in one of the most creative and important works made in the North African region in the last decade.

"Slumber " (In Arabic "Manam"), released in 2018, is an album of experimental electronic music that has as its main themes travel and dream and is proposed as a reflection, at times metaphysical, on the concept of time.

In this sense, the train represents the means of moving from one time to another, from one world to a different world, just as the dream that leads to travel between the conscious and the unconscious, between the constructed self and the true Self.

All the songs on the album are composed almost exclusively of sampled sounds recorded on train journeys that Dina el Wedidi made across Egypt from Cairo to Alexandria to Luxor and Aswan. The noise of the tracks, the shaking windows, the whistles, the shouts of the inspectors, the calls of the street vendors, the whispers of the passengers, the birds at dawn and the horns form a sound carpet on which the artist inserts her voice, never so ethereal as now.

The work to achieve such a result was monumental and confirms the talent, open-mindedness and dedication of this talented Egyptian author.

Between the release of this complex work and the creation of a new project, several years pass during which various singles appear on online platforms that musically explore the world of pop songs while maintaining a high level of quality.

In 2023 Dina el Wedidi released a new EP entitled “Khamsa Fusul” (Five Seasons). The album features a mix of acoustic instruments and electronic sounds. The five new songs that compose it are stylistically different and represent the personification of a particular feeling, a precise chapter of life.

For this new project the artist avails herself of the collaboration of four young poets (Nada El Shabrawy, Amr Nour, Ahmed Abdel Khaliq and Nabeel Abdel Hameed), five arrangers (Rami Attallah, Karim Hossam, Maher El Mallakh, Wael El Sayed and Fadi Badr) and a group of renowned instrumentalists both from Egypt and other Arab countries.

In a climate of absolute collaboration, the five songs of the EP took shape, very different songs that mix electronics never in the foreground with the swing of the Jump bands of the 40s, the melodic phrases of the Coptic spiritual repertoire, the Maqam of classical Arabic music, the Nubian sounds, the Chaabi and Jazz.

About the new project, the author states: "The album represents a musical experience and a new adventure in my journey as a producer and composer. It is an emotional journey into my thoughts and feelings accumulated over the past few years, the beginning of a new phase in my professional career,” adding: “Each album has a soul and represents a phase in my career. In addition, I always find that the stories behind each album are more interesting than the album itself. I present different stories and expose new feelings. I think it is the most emotional album I have ever made, both in the preparation phase and in its execution.”

With a multifaceted artistic personality, talented, curious, collaborative, and open to change, Dina el Wedidi is today one of the brightest musicians on the Egyptian music scene.

In 2024 she released some singles that seem to announce a new work. Once again, a lot has changed both in terms of music and image. A new direction to continue an adventure that always presents new stimuli.
