A new 3-hour mixtape that investigates the Arab electronic scene. Here are collected some of the musical proposals, in my opinion, most electrifying of recent years. Obviously this proposal is not exhaustive. I have collected here only the most accessible tracks excluding the most difficult and experimental productions (still absolutely excellent). Very good stuff, happy listening.

RispondiEliminaFantastic collection—thank you so much! I always look forward to your Arab Tunes mixtapes, as they consistently introduce me to artists I would never have discovered otherwise.
RispondiEliminaIn this collection, I have particularly enjoyed track 07: Taxi Kebab – Ttabla, track 28: Bab L Bluz – Gnawa Beat (Bayaka Remix), and track 34: Mona al Attar, Sahar el Zoghbi, Marwan Retro, Xena el Shazlii – Sahbet Ataba. Perhaps it’s because these modern tunes carry a more “traditional” underlying sound and rhythm.
It is so exciting and refreshing to hear music that is charting its own trajectory—not a slavish copy or twist of Western pop like K-pop. Instead, New Arab music seems to absorb elements of Western sounds and instruments, while crafting a distinct style and genre of its own. It reminds me of how 1950s R&B from the USA influenced Jamaican music, eventually giving rise to ska, rocksteady and then reggae. Similarly, Turkish modern music—outside its mainstream pop—has followed a distinctive and original path from the ’60s to the present, blending tradition with innovation in bold and unique ways.
Also—and just as importantly—by presenting these sounds to us all, you’re doing a great service for the Arab world. You’re showing that the Arab world, in the Middle East, Africa and Europe, is not solely backward, conservative or Medieval, as it is so often portrayed in the West.
I am not Arab and don’t understand Arabic. I am of Indian origin, born in the West, with influences rooted in punk and reggae—not Bollywood (aside from a few gems from the ’60s and ’70s, hehe). So thank you again for the immense pleasure and enjoyment you bring by sharing these tunes with me—and the world. They offer a rare window into a vibrant musical culture that transcends language. What you do bridges artistic worlds, sparks curiosity and challenges stereotypes.
Thank you very much for your comment. You hit the nail on the head. Arab Tunes was born as a blog with a purely informative intent. The aim has always been to culturally present the Arab world in its countless facets. A world rich in past and present culture that, precisely, does not simply copy Western trends, but creates autonomous, brilliant, and innovative worlds. I'm happy that this effort has been recognized. Thanks again.
