Complex questions and tangled puzzles

A void that holds accountable mistakes made

Should I write about the existing society?

Or should I go back to the history of existence?

Where did we start? And how did we get there?

From liquid to solid

From square to triangle

From the time of the feminization of God or after the dominance of males?

The universe revolves on a chain of madness

Wars wake up and sleep on a buried answer !

Once upon a time, at the beginning of the creation theatre. The Father of the Gods appeared on this primal hill, on which the first features of life appeared. The names of these features were derived from the nature of the place, such as night, darkness, disappearance, and vibration, on this hill an egg of a goose lay, Al Saa’iha al Kobra, and it turned darkness into light.
This first light and first sound that dispelled darkness and signified the earth’s creation from water.
In the middle of it, there was an island called the Flame Island, and on this island, there was a tribe. They followed a religion called Kharanda’ and One of the most important teachings of their religion is “There is no such thing as absolute truth, Everyone is seeking their own”.

These are the only notes that accompany the album entitled "Primal Ocean". Made in 2014 by a mysterious duo from Ramallah called Asnam al masrah, the album offers an electronic excursion into the world of metaphysics and the esoteric. The guarantee of the project is the production of Muqata'a, one of the best and most brilliant artists that the land of Palestine has ever given birth to. Originally released on Soundcloud, the album was re-proposed in 2020 on the bandcamp page of the Palestinian label Meds (Mediteranos), a recent Palestinian musical reality that offers truly obscure but very very interesting experimental projects. The album proposed here (like all the works made by the label) represents an all-round artistic production. It goes beyond the political and social problems of the area and explores spiritual territories of a more universal nature. Upon its release it did not receive the right attention and like many projects born on the web it fell into oblivion. For this reason I decided to dedicate a post to it. In my opinion, this is one of the best projects born in Palestine in the last decades.

Come siamo arrivati?

Yusor Hamed

Yusor Hamed is a young Palestinian singer, musician and producer born in Tunis to a mother originally from Gaza and a father originally from Tulkarem, a Palestinian city located in the northwest of the West Bank on the slopes of the Samaria mountains.

Having moved to Gaza with her family at the age of four, her earliest memories are filled with lazy mornings on the beach and happy afternoons at her grandmother's house. Interested in music since she was a child, Yusor spends entire days following television music programs that broadcast Arabic pop, Western R'n'B and Hip Hop while her parents, who are very permissive and complacent, supply her with cassettes of local artists such as Rim Banna, Nawal El Zoghbi, Najwa Karam and Wael Kfoury.

At the age of seven, given her propensity towards music, she was enrolled at the Edward Said National Conservatory in Ramallah where she began studying Qanun. Due to the work carried out by her parents in the service of the PLO, the entire family, following the electoral victory of the Islamic party in 2006, was forced to move permanently to Ramallah.

The serenity of her domestic life in Gaza, surrounded by her mother's large family, thus gives way to a new reality.

To overcome the situation Yusor seeks solace in music. She dedicates herself with passion to hes studies and develops increasingly complex pieces. Not wanting to limit herself to just Qanun, she begins to practice other instruments such as drums, piano and guitar.

In 2009 she joined the Momken Band, a Palestinian  group made up of young musicians. In this context she has the opportunity to demonstrate her skills as a Qanun player. With  the  Momken Band she released an album entitled “Keif Kan”, composed of nine songs whose lyrics are adaptations of original writings by various contemporary Palestinian poets and writers.

In 2018 she graduated in visual arts from the Palestinian International Academy of Art in Ramallah and moved temporarily to Amman in Jordan to take part in "BalaFeesh", an annual event dedicated to independent music from the Arab world, and to study music production under the guidance of Lebanese producer and musician Zeid Hamdan.

These are the years in which Yusor Hamed develops a completely personal style, creating songs that she publishes on the Soundcloud music platform, in which she mixes European electronics and traditional Arabic instruments with taste and delicacy.

Having returned to Palestine from Jordan with a wealth of experience that has allowed her to hone her talent in the field of electronic music, the Ramallah Rap scene knocks on her door. “Many hip hop artists contacted me to collaborate,” says the young musician, “I wrote choruses and verses. I gained experience working on other people's beats. It taught me so much about songwriting."

She collaborates with various Hip Hop artists, always giving each individual song a recognizable personal contribution. However, her association with the genre represents only one way to explore the depth of her art as her musical vision is absolutely eclectic.

Along with her satisfactions, however, also come the problems, both those within the Palestinian hip hop scene and others linked to her being a woman who sings and performs while the country is in terrible conditions.

In recent years it has become increasingly difficult for musicians to perform in the occupied West Bank, as some of the local population consider it disrespectful to dance and sing while the community is besieged by security forces and settlers.

As a Palestinian woman, Yusor therefore sees her freedom limited not only by walls, checkpoints and army raids, but also by her own community. She has had restrictions imposed on her alike by the Israeli army, the Palestinian Authority and those who argue that women should stay at home and stay away from music. “When I was a teenager I was exposed to the world of men,” she explains, “To the idea that men go out and fight while women have to stay at home, off the streets.”

Many problems also arose in relation to her physical appearance and the depth of her voice. The simple decision to cut her hair short resulted in her being the subject of nasty comments and insinuations about her gender. In reference to these events she states: “At the time I was embracing my masculine energy and wanted to show it. But people didn't want to see it. I felt like I wasn't welcome in this society because I'm different."

Even though she was confident in her abilities, Yusor had to go through a difficult period which led her not to promote her work, thus entering into a serious crisis with herself and with her own identity

The unexpected advent of the pandemic in 2020 offers her the opportunity to take a step back and focus on her music. She makes good use of the lockdown limitations by working on her production skills and perfecting her sound.

She grows her hair and begins to present herself in a way deemed more feminine, yet remains determined to continue to challenge the suffocating stigmas assigned to gender. From the continuous state of tension that has arisen, she has found the strength to continue her career and forge a truly personal path in which music represents an opportunity to be free to express herself and present herself on her own terms, a way to resist boundaries imposed from outside. “Masculinity and femininity are there in my presence” she states “they are in my lyrics, in my voice and in the way I present myself. Now I choose to show both, I am myself."

In 2021 she released a new song entitled “Asil Barri” in collaboration with Maysa Daw (songwriter and member of the group Dam)  , Lina Makoul, Nancy Hawa and Noel Kharman, a song that represents a cry of courage aimed at raising awareness about violence against women in Arab communities.

Yusor dedicates herself to the project with enthusiasm, organizing the communication, taking care of the recordings as well as producing and composing the entire track with Maysa Daw. “It was a difficult responsibility but I didn't feel alone. I felt I had kind and unique people to work with” The success of the single represents an injection of confidence for this young artist who  says: “it raised my vibrations, it made me believe in myself and my creations and made me feel seen from two perspectives: as a singer and as a music producer and composer".

In 2022 she created her first work as a soloist. It's a four-track EP entitled “Tuffah” thematically focused on her life experiences, the difficulties of being part of a people in constant struggle and the limitations resulting from her gender. It is a work full of strength which sees her collaborate again with Maysa Daw in the track of the same name, a slow and melancholy song, at the same time sad and full of hope (a distinctive feature of Yusor Hamed's production), in which the desire is revealed that one day the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea will no longer be fragmented.

The track titled "Minl Jamal Lal Jalal", a tribute to the traditional sound of Palestine saturated with electronic moods, sees her collaborate with Jay Jay, an emerging name in the contemporary Palestinian rap scene. In the remaining songs she makes use of the collaboration of the singer Rasha Nahas, in “Ghanilek” a song about love and loss and of Ahmad Mizro, in the track entitled “Te'rafi Bel Ghaib”.

Brilliant, well-written and well-produced work, confirms Yusor Hamed as one of the most versatile, innovative and exciting artists on the contemporary Palestinian music scene.

Strengthened by the good results obtained from the project, Yusor is moving to take her music outside the regional space. She made contact for a European tour and lent her voice to a song called “Phoenix” by the German group Malaka Hostel.

If leaving national borders represents the right step for the affirmation  of her career however, in reality, for a Palestinian artist, it's an almost obligatory choice. In recent years, many of her concerts have been canceled, sometimes due to national tragedies, sometimes for inexplicable reasons. As a musician residing in the occupied territories, it's impossible for her to perform in Israel and her mode of action is extremely limited. Another deadly side effect of the longest-running occupation in the world which has made the erasure of the Palestinian identity one of its primary objectives.

But temporary exile does not represent an insurmountable problem for this young musician, creator of a stubbornly personal style. “It scares me that I don't have a plan for the future,” says Yusor, “My comfort zone is here, among my people, with my language and my family. It's scary to go into the unknown, but movement is part of being a musician. And I still keep reminding myself that i will always come back."

In riferimento a queste vicende afferma : “All’epoca stavo abbracciando la mia energia maschile e volevo mostrarla.

E continuo comunque  a ricordare a me stessa che tornerò sempre”.

Reem Talhami

Reem Talhami is a Palestinian singer and actress born on 6 August 1968 in Shafa 'Amr, a predominantly Arab village located in the Galilee region. For five years she studied music and singing at the "Rubin" music and dance academy in Jerusalem, graduating in 1987. For about two years she taught singing at the conservatories of Ramallah and Jerusalem.

The beginning of the 90s saw her lay the foundations for what would be the activity that would occupy most of her artistic life: singing. One of her first major works will see her collaborate with Greek pianist
Sarantis Kassaras on a project for voice and piano. She will accompany him to Egypt and Tunisia on a tour organized by the Kasbah Theater in Jerusalem. Gifted with a versatile voice, which ranges from operatic singing to popular singing, Reem Telhami collaborated with various musical realities of the mid-90s. These include the groups Gorbeh, Washem and Sabreen.

With Washem, a group led by musician Suhail Khoury, she released an album entitled "Ashiqa" in 1995. An uncompromising artist, Reem Tahlamy has always refused to compromise with her art, art which she actually considers a life project. Throughout her career she has always favored the creation of important projects, both musical and lyrical. The essence of her work can be found in the Palestinian cause, in the traditions and history of her land, in the history of a people under continuous occupation. Through her singing, Reem Talhami tells with a firm voice the injustices, hopes, pains and search for freedom of a people who yearn for salvation.

“We are ambassadors of Palestinian art in the world and we have the great responsibility to promote our cause, to present it to the world in the most beautiful way to discover our heritage, our art and our experiences” he stated in an interview, “I believe that my country has a right on me, my duty towards my country calls me to mobilize my work towards it. I don't see my art isolated from the problems of my land and I believe that the artist, if he is sincere and honest, has a social impact that cannot be overlooked."

Among the strongest and most representative female voices in Palestine, Remm Tahlami has acted in theater works, films and taken part in various artistic projects. She has collaborated with the most gifted musicians and lyricists of her land. Among these are the musicians Jamil Sayeh, Sa'id Murad, Basil Zayed, Habib Shehadeh Hanna, the composers Ibrahim Najm and Ibrahim Al Khatib and the Zimar musical collective. If at the beginning of her career she dedicated herself more to the interpretation of texts belonging to the historical tradition of Palestinian poetry, poems by iconic authors such as Samih Al-Qasim, Mahmoud Darwish, Rashid Hussein and Tawfiq Ziad, pillars of a resistant and committed lyric poetry, later he preferred collaboration with contemporary poets such as Waddah Zaqtan. Arafat Al-Deek and Khaled Juma.

In 2013, with the latter and with the composer Sa'id Murad, already author and arranger for the group Sabreen, she created her first solo album entitled "Yihmilni Elleil". Produced with the contribution of the A. M. Qattan Foundation, the album includes ten songs whose main theme is the reality of Gaza. The besieged, imprisoned and marginalized Gaza is revealed in this album in all its beauty, strength, pride and hope for life. In the words of Khaled Jouma the city of Gaza is elevated in spirit and a sort of mixture is created between the real city and the city for which the poet yearns. The narrative vocabulary is very far from that usually used to describe the reality of the strip. The lyrics of these songs take you into a wider space, away from destruction, bombings, blood and war, into a condition of devotion and candour.

Reem Tahlami,Sa'id Murad, Khaled Juma
The melodies of the Jerusalemite musician Sa'id Murad, beautiful and complex, and the voice of Reem Talhami, who in this work continues her project of aesthetic modernization of Palestinian singing, complete the picture and make "Yihmilni Elleil" a fully successful album or as Mahmoud Abu Hashhash, director of the Culture and Arts Program of the Qattan Foundation, defined it as: “A record that constitutes a qualitative addition both for contemporary Palestinian song and for the artistic path of its performers”.

Considered by many to be the "Pearl of Palestine", Reem Tahlami has participated in various international events. She has performed throughout the Middle East, the Maghreb area and Europe. Her performance at the International Festival of Carthage in Tunisia as part of “Voices of Freedom”, an event organized on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the occupation of Jerusalem, was memorable and noteworthy were his performances at the international festival of Damascus in Syria, at the Beiteddine Festival in Lebanon and at the Aix en Provence Festival in France. She has also appeared at numerous international art events in Sweden, Denmark, France, Spain, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland.

Despite unanimous acclaim from critics and certificates of esteem, Reem Talhami's work has often remained hidden at a mass level over the years. A proud woman, aware and constantly devoted to the Palestinian cause, a cause that she interprets not only in a political key but mainly in an artistic one, she has always rejected the commercialization of her art for the sake of profit and generalized fame. Considering the energy spent, the artistic research and the stubbornness in trying to spread the art of her land on a global level, she has never seen her merits truly recognised, often occupying a niche position. This post is intended as a tribute to her art and an invitation to discover (or rediscover) the work of one of the most important Palestinian artists of the last century.

È apparsa inoltre in numerosi eventi artistici internazionali in Svezia, Danimarca, Francia, Spagna, Belgio, Germania e Svizzera.

Rim Banna ريم بنا R.I.P 1966 - 2018

On March 24th in Nazareth, her hometown, the renowned Palestinian singer Rim Banna died at the age of 51. Daughter of the Palestinian poetess Zuheira Sabbagh, whose various poems she will play during her career, Rim studied in the 80s at the Moscow Conservatory where she met the Ukrainian guitarist Leonid Alexeyenko, her future husband from whom she will have three children. Hercareer took off in the early 90s with the release of the album "The Dream". This will be followed by other excellent works such as the albums "" The mirrors of my soul ", dedicated to Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli prisons," Seasons Of Violet - Lovesongs From The Palestine "containing various maternal poems musically adapted and" Revelation Of Ecstasy & Rebellion ", a very deep and poetic album, not perfectly understood in the West, which saw the singer investigate the ancient Arab poetry in a transversal way. Produced by the Norwegian musician Bugge Wesseltoft, "Revelation Of Ecstasy & Rebellion" is perhaps her most complete and complex work with which the artist goes beyond the Palestinian question, always present in her works, and embraces the Arab philosophical heritage in its totality.

An intelligent and open musician and a strong and courageous woman Rim Banna has personally combined her political commitment with musical research, proposing to her countrymen a lay faith with the statement: "We are not Christians and Muslims but Palestinians, our strength it is our national identity, our attachment to our land ".

Very active internationally, over the last decade Rim Banna will tighten a deep bond with the Scandinavian music scene and will sponsor in the Nordic countries many Palestinian artistic realities such as the beautiful project Checkpoint 303 that will make the album "The Iqrit Files" with the label Norwegian Kirkelig Kulturverksted thanks to her interest.

In 2009, she will discover she is suffering from breast cancer and will start treatment. She will always talk about the matter in an open and sincere way, showing herself to be a proud woman of character.

The disease will not be eradicated and will reoccur after a few years. Even if sick Rim Banna will continue her musical activity holding many concerts, especially in Europe, the last of which will take place in Malmo in Sweden in 2016.

True artist of the people Rim Banna gave voice to Palestinian suffering with poetry and honesty. With her death, Palestine loses one of its most personal, profound and sincere voices.

Ramzi’s life trajectory has by no means been ordinary. This Palestinian artist was born in Betlhehem in 1979 and grew up in the Al’ Amari refugee camp in Ramallah, where his family was forced to relocate to, in 1948.

The first intifada (1987/1992), the violence and the occupation greatly marked his childhood and his adolescence. At 16 years old he participated in a music workshop, an experience that changed his life.

From 1996 to 1998 he studies at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in Ramallah. In 1998 Ramzi received a scholarship to study viola at the National Regional Conservatory of Angers (France) until 2005. Ramzi graduated with a DEM in viola, chamber music. It is also in this conservatory that he encountered other students with whom he created Ensemble Dal’Ouna in 2000, dedicated to both Palestinian music and causes.

Today Ramzi splits his career among many projects. He is concert performer, bandleader of Ensemble Dal’Ouna, musical director of the Palestine National Arabic Music Ensemble, composer and arranger. Oftentimes he performs Western classical music as a soloist as well as with chamber music ensembles and orchestras.

In parallel, Ramzi’s deep engagement with humanity has led him to create the Al Kamandjâti Association in 2005. Al Kamandjâti mission is to bring music education to Palestinian children, in particular, to those who are most vulnerable – the children of the refugee camps.

In 2012 he released an album entitled "Reflections of Palestine" consists of his instrumental compositions.

Palestina.

Grandissimo violista e bouzoukista, Ramzi Aburedwan è infatti al lavoro su più fronti: non solo con i suoi prodotti da solista, come il bellissimo album del 2012 "Reflections of Palestine", e i suoi progetti Dal'Ouna e Al Manara;

Terez Sliman, Yazan Ibraheem along with five other musicians from the Golan Heights : Hassan Nakhleh, Amr Mdah , Shadi Awidat, Rami Nakhleh in addition to Hellanh Khater. met as friends where love was purer than water and where green was not merely a colour. The seven musicians produced songs with indications of both uproar and passion. The songs speak of a HOPE that brings us back to the most beautiful beginnings - LOVE- to life’s blossom – PEOPLE- and to the eyes that LAUGH despite all the sadness of the UNIVERSE.

Almond Blossom, a musical journey, its home is the skies and earth is simply a station
