Zina & Aziza

Zina and Aziza, the stage names of sisters Mahbouba and Chedlia Bouzaïane, were Tunisian dancers, singers, and actresses. Born in the working-class neighborhood of Melassine in Tunis, they defied their family and Tunisian social norms by resolutely dedicating themselves to the art of dance. Their father, a humble shoemaker, banished them from the family for years.

Their first performances took place in the 1950s in the "Kafichanta," singing cafés that were widespread in Tunis, particularly in the Bab Souika neighborhood.

Since the 1930s, venues such as "Al-Fath," "Cordoba," and "Alf Layla wa Layla" have hosted stars of popular art, who performed in concerts broadcast on national radio. It was in this context that the careers of the two sisters began. They initially attempted to pursue singing, but they attracted public attention with a new style of folk dance that was very distinct from the dancers who had preceded them, artists such as Aisha and Mamia.

The discovery of their talent is attributed to the renowned violinist Reda El Kalai, who committed himself to developing their talent and gave them the stage names Zeina and Aziza, to underscore the inseparable nature of their relationship. Reda El Kalai made them a regular presence at his concerts at the "Al Fatah" café, one of the most famous in the capital, with the El Manar company, ensuring the girls great visibility.

Reda El Kalai also introduced them to the renowned traditional singer Ismail Al-Hattab, who would regularly include them in his shows.

Upon becoming the first president of independent Tunisia, Habib Bourguiba, a great lover of dance and supporter of his country's arts, embarked on a cultural initiative aimed at spreading traditional arts, drawing artists from the narrow circle of the capital's cafés to participate in festivals across the country. In this context, Zina and Aziza, accompanied by Al-Hattab, toured Tunisia with their art. A major contribution to this effort was made by dancer Hamadi Al-Laghbabi, who permanently integrated the two sisters into the "National Folk Arts Troupe," bringing Tunisian folk dance to the international stage.

Zina and Aziza often performed for President Bourguiba at private parties held at the palace and accompanied him on his trips abroad to meet with his counterparts, acting as ambassadors of Tunisian culture, presenting the splendid image of an Arab country recently freed from colonial rule.

The sisters' international visibility reached its peak in 1958 when they participated in the Cannes Film Festival, appearing alongside Omar Sharif and Claudia Cardinale in Jacques Baratier's film "Goha."

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Zina and Aziza remained among Tunisia's most prominent artists, undisputed icons of Bedouin dance. Hugely popular and beloved, they performed at numerous festivals, theaters, and television programs, captivating audiences with their synergy and the harmony of their movements. They also recorded an album entitled "Etoiles De La Dance" and a couple of 45s, but they failed to achieve the widespread acclaim that dance had brought.

The change of regime in 1987, following the coup d'état that brought Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali to power, marked the end of the sisters' artistic adventure. The new president's lack of interest in popular culture, which was virtually banned from state television, accelerated the decline of the dancers, who gradually withdrew from the public stage to devote themselves to their families.

The death of Mahbouba (Zina) marked the artistic demise of the entire venture. Chedlia (Aziza), her surviving sister, refused to discuss their careers or dance until her death. Having passed away on August 28, 2024, at the age of 83, Chedlia, whose health had significantly deteriorated, did not receive the urgent medical care she needed, despite appeals for intervention from the competent authorities. She lived virtually forgotten on the meager pension of 350 Tunisian dinars (about $110) that she had been awarded for her work with the National Popular Dance Company. Zina and Aziza's was an exceptional artistic adventure, born in a time and place that no longer exist. Their contribution to Tunisian folk dance was enormous and indelible, even though decades later their illustrious career has gradually faded from memory. A few images remain of them, shared memories, and a popular expression referring to the two-carriage buses with the charming name of "Zina and Aziza," the inseparables.

Elie Touitou, better known by the stage name of Kahlaoui Tounsi, is a Tunisian singer and percussionist born on January 24, 1932. He spent his entire childhood in the popular districts of Sidi Maghdoum and Bab Souika, the latter district renowned for its artistic activities, especially during the month of Ramadan. From an early age Elie Touitou was attracted to the art of music and singing showing a keen interest in everything that belongs to the world of rhythm. At the time of his adolescence he was very impressed by the song "Fadhlek ya sayeg El matar" played by the Egyptian singer Mohamed El Kahlawy in the film "Rehba".

The young Elie learned it and sang it several times on several occasions with some success. Encouraged by his friends, he proposed to perform the piece on the program "Le coin des amateurs" produced by the deceased Mustapha Bouchoucha, director of the Music Service at the town radio located in Place Garibaldi. Elie interpreted the song perfectly and was warmly encouraged by Abdelaziz Laroui, host of the program, who proposed that he carry the stage name of "El Kahlaoui Tounsi" from that day on.

Supported and applauded will begin to make a name for himself and will broaden his musical horizon by inserting songs from the Middle Eastern tradition in the repertoire to be added to the reserve of songs belonging to the Tunisian musical culture.

In 1948 he will go to Paris to try a first musical adventure outside the national borders and will work as a percussionist for the Peter's Sisters troupe stationed at the Folies Bergère club. In 1949 he will return to Tunisia where he will complete an apprenticeship in oriental music combined with the sounds of the new emerging genre: jazz. To perfect and deepen the art of rhythm he will travel throughout North Africa, acquiring the musical secrets of Algeria, Morocco and Libya.

At the end of 1951 he will go back to Paris and will be hired as a percussionist for a period of two years at the well-known cabaret "El Djazair" located in the Latin Quarter. He will also record recitals and musical varieties on French radio with several Algerian, Kabyle, Moroccan, Tunisian and French companies.

Returning to his homeland in 1953 he will be hired as a drummer and percussionist of the philamornic orchestra of Radio Diffusion Tunisia, continuing to perfect his musical knowledge by exploring the Bedouin musical universe and its instruments. He will then accompany folkloristic companies specialized in desert music and will deepen the study of instruments such as Zoukra, Mizwad (both instruments similar to bagpipes, the first of the Libyan folk tradition, the second of the Tunisian one), Bendir, Darbouka and Chkacheks (very small cymbals used by the Berber musical tradition). At the end of 1953 he will move to the United States and will give concerts in the most famous clubs. In high demand, he will perform with several famous artists including Harry Belafonte with whom he will attend a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York.

In 1954 he will return to Tunisia to recover his family and move permanently to Paris. Here he will release several records for different labels, including Pathé Marconi, Philips, Teppaz, Phonogram, Barclay and, of course, Dounia, a record company that he will buy in 1960. Known and affirmed, he will travel the world spreading the song and the musical art of his country. In particular, he will devote himself to the performance of the genre called "Aroubi", a sort of premusical spell that has its roots in the Andalusian tradition handed down over the centuries by Sephardic storytellers. During his career El Kahlaoui el Tounsi has composed for various Tunisian artists (Asmham El Tounsia, Oulaya, Hédi Mokrani, Najet Samir, Mohsen Raies), Moroccans (Bahija Idriss, Maati Ben Kacem) and Lebanese (Najah Salam, Mohammed Salmane) and he actively worked to bring out a young Algerian singer who will become a star of the Arab musical firmament with the name of Warda.

Ridha El Kouiny, a famous Tunisian music chronicler and lyricist, wrote of him: "He is one of the symbols and one of the pillars of the Tunisian Jewish percussionists and singers who are attached to authentic Tunisian music, refined or popular in its various forms". Founder of a large orchestra, he regularly welcomes most of the stars of the Arab world who wish to perform in France such as: the Lebanese Wadih El Safi, the Egyptian Ahmed Adawiya, the Syrian Sabah.

Ahmed Hamza

Ahmed Ben Abdel Rahmane Hamza, better known as Ahmed Hamza, was a Tunisian singer and composer born on 14 December 1930 in Hay Borj Ennar, a neighborhood located within the medina of Sfax.

His father was a well-known Malouf singer and was one of the first to use the piano with a certain panache in the performance of classical melodies. He was also an oud virtuoso and ran a café chantant, a popular meeting place where traditional music was played and old records by Oum Kulthum, Mohammed Abdel Wahab and Saleh Abdelhay were listened to.

Of his eight children (six boys and two girls), Ahmed will be the only one to follow in the footsteps of the Father. In fact, at just ten he will compose the songs for the party at the end of the school year and will direct the choir of the institute.

Enrolled in the Franco-Arab school of Moulin ville, Ahmed Hamza will leave his studies at the age of twelve and will work for his father at the Café. There he will learn to play the piano, the oud and learn the tradition of Malouf interpreting the most famous arias. He will then begin to deal with the local artistic environment and early on a musical career performing at wedding, circumcision and graduation parties performing pieces by Mohamed Fawzi and Farid El Atrash . In parallel with his artistic activity at the Café, he will attend courses at the modern music school under the guidance of Hédi Channoufi and Mohamed Aloulou.

The latter will offer him the opportunity to join the orchestra he directs, called "Ahbab El Fen", on a tour in the region of Constantine in Algeria.

It can be said that Ahmed Hamza's artistic career began. In Algeria he meets Abdelhamid Ababsa who invites him to join his company. He will stay with the troupe of the famous Algerian composer for three years and will participate in various tours that will take him to perform throughout the country. In 1952 he will return to his homeland settling in the capital and will marry a dancer he met in Algiers from whom he will have two splendid children.

This is the time when his notoriety begins to increase. He performs in various shows sharing the stage with the most renowned artists of the period including Hassiba Rochdi and Ali Riahi and will reunite with Abdelhamid Ababsa's troupe for a tour of concerts in France.

In June 1957 he won a singing competition at the Tunisian radio broadcasting, which in those years was giving life to its first choral singing group, and became part of Abdelhamid Ben Aljija's musical project as a chorist in the company of others future great names of Tunisian song including Youssef Temimi, Mustapha Charfi, Mohamed Ahmed, Hédi Mokrani, Hédi Kallel, Oulaya, Naâma and Safia Chamia.

In 1958 he went to Cairo where he met the great Mohammed Abdel Wahab and recorded various songs for the Sawt el Arab and Shark el Awsat labels.

In 1960, following a decentralization of the artistic organization, he was offered the direction of the orchestra in Sfax, his hometown. Thanks to more than fifteen years of accumulated experience and a vast wealth of knowledge acquired in the musical field of the Maghreb, Ahmed Hamza will carry out his task at best, proposing arrangements that draw heavily in traditional music, in the Sufi tradition, in music modern and in the musical heritage of his native region.

Among his best-known pieces, “Jari ya Hammouda” certainly stands out, a composition by the Algerian musician Ali Khencheli (also known as Mahmoud Djellal). The song will become well known throughout the Maghreb thanks also to the interpretation that the singer Oulaya will make of it.

Having become an established artist, he will become part of the national radio and television orchestra on a permanent basis. He will participate in various tours both in the North African area and in France assuming the role of representative of Tunisia at various official meetings including: The Maghrebian song festival in 1958, the Pan-African conference in Algiers in 1969, the commemorations for the anniversary of independence of Algeria in 1972.

In 1966 he revealed his acting skills by participating in the first Tunisian feature film entitled “El Fajr” by director Omar Khlifi. Ahmed Hamza will record several albums and compose for many artists including Fethia Khaïri, Naâma, Oulaya, Kacem Kefi. Throughout his life he will continue his musical journey of rediscovery of the region's artistic heritage.

He will die on March 15, 2011 in Tunis

Oum Kulthum, Mohammed Abdel Wahab e Saleh Abdelhay.

Halima El Sheikh, better known as Na'ama, was a great Tunisian singer born in Azemmour on February 23, 1936. Raised in a music-loving family, her father was a famous country singer and her mother an amateur singer. was fascinated by the world of notes from an early age. Following the divorce of her parents, she moved to live with her mother in the medina of the capital. This event will change the course of her life as much as her meeting with Bechir Ressaissi, head of the Baidaphone record label, who introduced her to the world of music at a very young age.

At the age of 11 she will perform interpretations of popular songs and she will begin a process of exploration and discovery of her own vocal possibilities that will lead her to assert herself in the course of adolescence. At the age of 16 she will marry Abed Derouiche, a 29-year-old notary, with whom she will have three children. Her family commitments, however, will not prevent her artistic career. She will sing at private parties, weddings and neighborhood parties building her reputation thanks to a bewitching voice and a strong stage presence.During a gala evening in support of the disabled, her performance will strike the artist Saleh Mahdi who will give her the stage name of Na'ama, sweetness. The splendid performance of the piece "Habibi laâbitou" will be worth entering the Errachidia orchestra. Regular presence on national radio in 1958, she traveled to many countries in the Middle East and managed to establish herself as one of the best Tunisian artists. Her radio concerts and her participation in important festivals will spread her fame by making her an international celebrity.

Renowned authors will want to write for her. The aforementioned Saleh Mahdi will compose for her "Ya Nass Makassah qalbou", "Al dunya hania" and "Al leyla ah ya leyl", famous love songs, while the great composer Khams Tarnan, seduced by his talent, will propose the songs " Shari'a El Hubb "and" Ghanni Ya 'usfour ".

Safoua

Safoua (
Sometimes transliterated Safwa)  is an tunisian singer from, I assume, the Sfax area. There is not much news related to this good interpreter. The Discogs site, for example, believes she is already dead, but I don't think that's true. The only certain news concerns her participation in recent years in a commemorative evening concerning the artists of Sfax and her hospitalization for health problems which occurred last year.

What is certain is that she has made many songs during her career and that, like other good Tunisian singers very active during the 60s and 70s, her work has been forgotten in recent years.

With this post I would like to re / propose a selection of her work and I would like to thank the brothers of the Sama3y Forum who, with their passionate work, make available the songs of many important authors for the history of music from Arab-speaking countries.
