The Musical Heritage of Morocco : Cheikha Donna

Great singer dedicated to the musical tradition of Aita. She made several singles for the Moroccan record company Khaldiphone and worked with some of the most important names belonging to the traditional Moroccan music scene.

The selection proposed here is quite small but useful to understand the qualities of this good interpreter.

Nuggets from the Ghiwane Generation / Issue # 1

With this post I would like to inaugurate an appointment, which in the intentions would like to be periodic and regular, to present some musical gems belonging to what is called Ghiwane Generation; that group of bands which, inspired by the well-known precursors (Nass el Ghiwane, Jil Jilala and Lemchaheb, in short the sacred trimurti), have contributed to radically renew the Moroccan music scene of the 70s. Many of them have made only a handful of 7 "and very little is known about their history, but fortunately the music tracks remain to testify to their precious contribution.

I would like to propose here some of these real pearls. Some are my own recordings while others have been kindly given to me by friends. The quality is not always excellent (or good) but the spirit is absolutely alive and powerful.

Happy listening to everyone.

Buon ascolto a tutti.

Ro'at El Sahra'

Among the many groups belonging to what has been called Ghiwani Generation many have been forgotten and / or obscured by the fame of sacred monsters such as Nass el Ghiwane, Jil Jilala and Lemchaheb. The re-discovery process that took hold in the western area in the early 2000s allowed us to get to know many groups that, although considered minor, made a great contribution in qualitative terms to the music scene born in the '70s in Morocco.

Among the many my choice this time fell on a particular group called Ro'at el Sahra ', literally translatable as The shepherds of the desert.

Information about them is scarce as well as the songs available. It seems they come from the city of Meknes and have distinguished themselves for the use of the flute, played by Abdul Majeed al-Raiwi, in addition to the usual instrumentation of the bands belonging to the same musical scene.

It seems that the group was short-lived and dissolved following strong internal disagreements (seems that the mother of one of the members  has played an important role in the negative fate of the group).

Few of their songs remain in the  handful of 7 "available on the collectors market. I don't know if they ever made an album. What is certain is that their song entitled "Salah Biladi" is considered one of the most beautiful songs born from the Ghiwane Generation.

I have collected here the few songs in my possession; although small, I believe that the collection can give an idea of the value of the group.

As always, if someone has more information I would be more than grateful if they wanted to share it.
