Arabian Knightz

Egypt, modern land of revolution for peace and empowerment.

In the midst of a murderous political regime, the youth of Egypt adopted hip hop as their voice of resistance. Arabian Knightz, the premier hip hop group from the land of the Nile River and the Pyramids of Giza, have not only established themselves as the lyricists with the sharpest swords in their land, but they also created the most consistently original sound of any Egyptian crew to pick up the mic, a voice for rebellion, strength and hope for the youth of the Middle East.

Arabian Knightz banded together in 2006 through the emcee cipher, hip hop’s natural way of choosing like mindsets on the mic. Rush, Sphinx and E-Money were ahead of their peers, adapting an authentic Arab perspective to the art dominated by Western voices, mixing English and Arabic raps to exemplify their versatility and universality.

After hitting the studio for a few underground tracks and gaining a viral following, AK enlisted super-producer Fredwreck (Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Tha Dogg Pound), an early believer in not only the group but also the entire movement of hip hop in the Middle East. “Fokkak”, the single from this studio session, was an instant hit and projected them to the top ten of the singles charts.

Arab League Records was formed amidst a growing fanbase and numerous collaborations with other Arab hip hop artists, the first international Arab hip hop record label. Desert Saga Volume 1 mixtape was the debut release, led by the “The One”, featuring an amazing Arabic verse from Egypt’s MC Amin, a song and video that has become an international underground favorite.

Arabian Knightz have recorded their debut album, Uknighted State of Arabia, a masterpiece for Arab hip hop years in the making, featuring instrumentals dominated by traditional percussions and players, the first album of its kind. AK have recently released the singles “New Day”, “Knightmarez” and “Desert Queen” featuring Khaled Seleem, as well as collaborations with Snoop Dogg and Steele of Smif n Wesson.

In 2012, Arabian Knightz will break through to the world with the highly anticipated release of Uknighted State of Arabia, touring the globe with their message of peace, empowerment and unity. The revolutionary movement has swept through the Middle East and North Africa and the time for their message is right, a youth movement through hip hop creating a new future against terror and oppression.

Mohamed Mounir محمد منير‎ - Selected discography (Reloaded & Revisited)

Mohamed Mounir (born October 10, 1954) is a popular Egyptian singer and actor. He is one of the best-known musicians, both in Egypt and throughout the Middle East, with a musical career spanning more than three decades. He incorporates various genres into his music, including classical Arabic Music, Nubian music, blues, jazz and reggae. His lyrics are noted both for their philosophical content and for their passionate social and political commentary. He is affectionately known by his fans as “The King” in reference to his album and play "El Malek Howa El Malek" (The King is The King).

Born into a Nubian family in Aswan, Mounir spent most of his early childhood in the village of Manshyat Al Nubia, where he shared his father's interests in both music and politics. As a teenager, he and his family were forced to relocate to Cairo when his village was lost in the floods that followed the construction of the Aswan Dam. It was here that he studied photography at the Faculty of Applied Arts at Helwan University. During this period, he would often sing for friends and family at social gatherings. His singing voice was noticed by the lyricist Abdel-Rehim Mansour, who would go on to introduce Mounir to the renowned folk singer Ahmed Mounib.

Following his graduation, he was called up for military service in 1974, during which he continued his professional musical career by performing in various concerts. He performed his first such concert in 1975. Although the public were initially critical of Mounir for performing in casual attire at a time where Arab singers were expected to wear suits, they eventually warmed to his laidback image.

After completing his military service, Mounir released his 1977 debut solo album "Alemony Eneeki" on the Sonar record label. Mounir went on to release 5 more consecutive official albums and featured on one soundtrack album under the Sonar label. To date, Mounir has released a total 20 official albums and featured on 6 soundtrack albums under a number of different record labels.

Mounir’s single “Maddad” from this album caused controversy, as its lyrics could be interpreted as a call for intercession from the prophet Muhammad. Amongst Muslims, there are differing views as to whether the prophet can provide intercession between Allah and his believers. This resulted in the music video being banned from Egyptian television for a time. Mounir responded by saying "it is this fight against rigid thought that makes something out of you".

On his 2003 follow up album "Ahmar Shafayef" (Lipstick), he returned to his more familiar style of mainly secular lyrics. In the summer of 2003, following the release of his album Mounir toured Austria, Germany and Switzerland alongside the Austrian pop musician Hubert von Goisern, and later that year the duo performed a concert in Asyut.

In May 2004, he held a large concert at the pyramids, during which he was physically attacked by a drunken fan. Despite sustaining minor injuries, he continued his performance until the end of the concert.

He continued his trend of releasing secular albums infused with social commentary with the release of his 2005 album “Embareh Kan Omry Eshren” (Yesterday I Was Twenty), album "Ta'm El Beyout" (Taste of Homes), released in 2008. Ta'm El Beyout was noted for its creativity but initially did not perform as well as expected in terms of album sales. In 2012, Mounir released his latest album "Ya Ahl El Arab we Tarab".

In 2008, Mounir postponed his New Year's Eve concert at Cairo Opera House in solidarity with the Palestinians suffering the effects of the Gaza War. He issued the statement: "delaying the concert is a message sent to the whole world, so that it would move forward and help the people in Gaza."

He headlined the Liverpool Arabic Arts Festival 2010 on the 9th July at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

As well as his singing career, Mounir also has an active acting career. Throughout his career he has appeared in 12 movies, 3 television series and 3 plays .

His movie career began in 1982, when he acted in and featured on the soundtrack album Youssef Chahine film “'Hadouta Masreia” (An Egyptian Story).
In 1997 he played the role of the bard in the Youssef Chahine French-Egyptian historical drama “Al Maseer” (Destiny), which screened out of competition at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival. Mounir played the part of the blind poetry professor “Bashir” in the controversial 2005 film "Dunia". The movie is centered around the title character Dunia, a belly dancer and poet played by Egyptian actress Hanan Tork. When the film aired at the 2005 Cairo International Film Festival, it left the audience split between those supporting the film’s calls for intellectual freedom and its anti-female circumcision stance, and those disapproved of either the title character’s desire to physically express herself through dance, or of the filming of scenes in the Cairo’s slums which could be seen to tarnish Egypt's international image.

Gnawa Diffusion

Gnawa Diffusion is a French and Algerian Gnawa music band based in Paris, France. The group's lead singer, Amazigh (literally meaning 'Free Man' in Tamazight), is the son of the Algerianwriter and poet Kateb Yacine. Although there is a strong Gnawa influence, the band is noted for its mix of reggae and roots music. Gnawa Diffusion is very popular in Algeria and is also well known in many other countries including Morocco and France. The band's lyrics are in Arabic, Tamazight, French and English. Gnawa Diffusion started their career in 1993 with the release of the album Légitime différence.

Members of the band:
Amazigh Kateb - vocal and gimbri
Mohamed Abdenour - mandolin, banjo, krakebs, choir
Pierre Bonnet - bass
Philippe Bonnet - drums
Salah Meguiba - Keyboard, oriental percussion, choir
Pierre Feugier - guitar, choir, krakebs
Abdel Aziz Maysour
Amar Chaoui - percussionist, choir

The lead singer's lyrics are often controversial. Themes range from discussions of poverty in Algeria or corruption in government to denunciations of global military actions and perceived imperialism. Nevertheless, in spite of a strong political direction, this band also has more entrancing numbers which focus on self-determination and improvement.

Sabri Moudallal

Born in Aleppo in 1918, highly esteemed by native Aleppians but scarcely known beyond the city limits, he has almost always lived outside the " star system ". His talent was revealed relatively late on his life, from the seventies on, when he gave a series of concerts in Paris with his group of the time, a vocal quartet known as " The Muezzins of Aleppo ". Ever since then he has received constant requests from abroad, has been appointed principal muezzin of the city and was even decorated in 1996 by Farouk Hosni, the Egyptian Minister of Culture.

His lack of interest in promoting his art has actually handicapped him in the past to such an extent that his name is not even to be found amongst those quoted in the two key works on contemporary Syrian music, by Adnân Bin Dhurayl (Damascus 1988) and Samîm al-Sharîf (Damascus, 1991). Sabri Moudallal was one of Syria's greatest vocal artists, with a prodigious output as a composer. He has taken the art of the flourish to its highest degree, even developing a vocal technique enabling him to take his breath whilst singing. Although he remained a faithful adept of the sacred song, he was equally at home in the secular repertory. In spite of his great age, he was still pursuing his career. He was a pupil of Umar al-Batsch himself, and his great speciality was the wasla, of which he was a true master in every aspect, down to the most minute detail. Like his master he had also put his hand and skill to composition in the traditional style. There are several very beautiful songs by his hand ; two of these " Ahmad yâ habibi " and " Ilâhî " have been recorded for " The Aleppian Music Room ". Sabri Moudalal passed away in August 2006.
