New Voices from Middle Atlas : Saida Titrit ⵙⴰⵄⵉⴷⴰ ⵜⵉⵜⵔⵉⵜ

With this post I would like to continue the journey of discovery of the new emerging voices in the Amazigh music scene related to the Khenifra area. The singer I propose today is called Saida Titrit which, like Aicha Maya, is considered one of the most promising voices of the contemporary Moroccan Berber song.

The limit that we face when undertaking research in this field is given by the difficulty concerning the availability of information. In fact, in spite of a wide availability of video and audio material, specialized websites do not consider providing information related to the life, career and production of individual artists. Very often a lot of confusion is created and incorrect information is published.

As for Saida Titrit, a small biography is available for example on the Moroccan website "L'opinion", but the news reported leaves some doubts. In fact there is another singer, Saida Akil, who adopts the stage name of Titrit and very often the information concerning the two singers is mixed together generating misunderstandings.

In order not to report incorrect information I will limit myself to reporting that Saida Titrit belongs to the tribe of Ait Bouzawite located at the sources of the Umm Rabi'a river in the province of Khenifra, the city where she currently resides. Active for some years, excels in the art of Tamawayt, as can be seen from his performances contained in the many videos on You Tube.

The Tamawayt is a particular poetic form of the song Amazigh that consists of the vocal execution of short sentences containing one or more verses. Western reading often translates this singing form with the term "Assolo", but it is a rough translation that does not do justice to this form of art. The Tamawayt is often performed without vocal accompaniment and usually provides a prelude to the song that is being performed, although many times it acquires the character of a song in its own right. It is characterized by poetic beauty (the words used contain a high symbolic value and belong to traditional amazigh terminology) and harmonic richness, the performance provides an excellent vocal ability and a very high register, which makes it almost exclusive prerogative of the female gender .

Saida Titrit is a credible heir of the great champions of the art of Tamawayt, great performers such as Hadda Ouakki, Cherifa Kersit and Yamna N'aziz Tafarssit, indisputable queen of this particular technique.

Compared to Aicha Maya, an artist very similar to her, I find in Saida Titrit a greater genuineness, but this is a very personal opinion.

La cantante che propongo oggi si chiama Saida Titrit la quale , al pari di Aicha Maya, viene considerata come una delle voci più promettenti della canzone berbera marocchina contemporanea.

Il limite che ci si trova ad affrontare quando si intraprende una ricerca in questo campo è dato dalla difficoltà riguardante la reperibilità di informazioni. Infatti, a fronte di un ampia disponibilità per quando riguarda il materiale video e audio , i siti specializzati non ritengono di fornire informazioni legate alla vita, la carriera e la produzione dei singoli artisti. Molto spesso si viene a creare molta confusione e vengono pubblicate informazioni errate.

Per quanto riguarda Saida Titrit è disponibile per esempio una piccola biografia sul sito marocchino “L’opinion”, ma le notizie riportate lasciano qualche dubbio. Esiste infatti un' altra cantante , Saida Akil, che adotta il nome d’arte di Titrit e molto spesso le informazioni riguardanti le due cantanti vengono mischiate generando fraintendimenti.

Per non riportare informazioni scorrette quindi mi limiterò a segnalare che Saida Titrit appartiene alla tribu di Ait Bouzawite locata presso le sorgenti del fiume Umm Rabi’a nella provincia di Khenifra, città nella quale risiede attualmente. Attiva da alcuni anni ,eccelle nell’arte del Tamawayt, come si può appurare dalle sue esibizioni contenute nei molti video presenti su You Tube.

Il Tamawayt è una particolare forma poetica della canzone Amazigh che consiste nell’esecuzione vocale di brevi strofe contenenti uno o più versi . La lettura occidentale traduce molte volte questa forma canora con il termine “Assolo”, ma si tratta di una traduzione approssimativa che non rende giustizia a questa forma d’arte. Il Tamawayt viene eseguito spesso senza accompagnamento vocale e solitamente fornisce il preludio al brano che si sta per eseguire, anche se molte volte acquisisce il carattere di un brano a sé stante. Si caratterizza per bellezza poetica ( le parole usate contengono un alto valore simbolico e appartengono alla terminologia amazigh tradizionale) e ricchezza armonica , l’esecuzione prevede infatti un eccellente capacità vocale ed un registro molto alto , fatto che lo rende appannaggio quasi esclusivo del genere femminile.

Saida Titrit risulta un erede credibile delle grandi fuoriclasse dell’arte del Tamawayt, grandi interpreti quali Hadda Ouakki, Cherifa Kersit e Yamna N'aziz Tafarssit, regina incontestabile di questa particolare tecnica .

Rispetto ad Aicha Maya, artista per molti aspetti a lei simile, trovo in Saida Titrit una maggiore genuinità, ma questa è un opinione del tutto personale .
