Chaba Zoulikha شابة زوليخة

 

Hassina Louaj, known by the stage name of Chaba Zoulikha, was a great Algerian singer of Amazigh origin born on 6 December 1956 in Khenchela, a city in northeastern Algeria. Growing up in a family of humble origins originally from Bou Saada, she comes into contact with art and singing thanks to the teachings of her father, passionate about theater, and her brother a musician.

At the age of ten she began singing songs belonging to the popular tradition of the Aures region, drawing in particular from the repertoire of Aïssa Djermouni (Amazigh poet and singer) performing at wedding parties and official events in the cities of Batna, Souk Ahras and Biskra. In 1968 she recorded her first single at an Annaba label containing songs "Al Sbitar Al 'ali" and "Ma tbakichi Ya Selima", interpreted using the Ay Ay style, a particular type of Bedouin song widely spread in the countryside in the Algerian desert. 

The success of this first album leads her to move to Algiers where she meets the poet Abdel Rahman Qassem with whom she joins a fruitful artistic collaboration. In 1976 she participated in a musical program called "Al Hane wa Chabab", broadcast on Algerian television, interpreting the song "Sob rach rach". The success obtained with her performance will make her known to the general public ensuring her national fame. Maâti Bachir and Khelifi Ahmed, two very big names in the Algerian musical scene, begin to take an interest in her and will accompany her on her artistic path, allowing her to achieve great success in a very short time. Khalifi Ahmed, the dean of Bedouin chant nicknamed "The Singer of the Steppe", will always praise her vocal style in performing the art of Mawwal. In 1977 she took part as an actress in the film by Algerian director Nadir Mohamed Azizi entitled "Zaitun buhlilat" sharing the main role with Ezzedine Mujobi, the famous actor who was killed in 1995 by Islamic terrorism. The importance of this feature film will be recognized in recent times. It is in fact one of the few Algerian films that will deal with social issues in a particular historical period that tended to overshadow culturally engaged cinema.

Great interpreter of the Chaoui culture, shy and reserved, this talented artist gifted not only with a powerful voice, but with a very particular lyricism, has contributed with her songs to enrich the Algerian cultural heritage for more than two decades. There are more than one hundred and twenty songs recorded by her deposited in the archives of Algerian television. Songs that have made her one of the queens of Bedouin singing in eastern Algeria (like Teldja, a singer she often shares). In 1992 she will hold her last concert on the occasion of a benevolent event. A serious illness will lead to her death the following year. Chaba Zoulikha, you will die on November 15, 1993 in her house of  Kouba, the municipality in which she resided for years. Her body will be buried in Khenchela, her hometown. 

She was only 37 years old.

 

 

 

 

 

Hassina Louaj, conosciuta con il nome d’arte di  Chaba Zoulikha, è stata una grande cantante algerina di origini Amazigh nata il 6 dicembre 1956  a  Khenchela, città dell'Algeria nordorientale.

Cresciuta in una famiglia di umili origini originaria di Bou Saada, entra in  contantto con l’arte ed il canto grazie agli insegnamenti del padre , appassionato di teatro , e del fratello musicista.

All’età di dieci anni inizia a cantare brani appartenenti alla tradizione popolare della regione dell’Aures, attingendo in particolar modo al repertorio di Aïssa Djermouni (poeta e cantante Amazigh) esibendosi a feste di matrimonio e ad eventi ufficiali  nelle città di Batna, Souk Ahras e Biskra.

Nel 1968 registra il suo primo singolo presso un casa descografiica di Annaba contenente brani "Al Sbitar Al ‘ali" e "Ma tbakichi Ya Selima", interpretati utilizzando lo stile Ay Ay, un particolare tipo di canto   beduino ampiamente diffuso nelle campagne nel deserto algerino.

Il successo ottenuto da questo primo disco la porta a trasferirsi ad Algeri dove conosce il poeta  Abdel Rahman Qassem con il quale unizia una fruttuosa collaborazione artistica.

Nella 1976  partecipa ad un programma musicale intitolato “Al Hane wa Chabab”, trasmesso dalla televisione algerina, interpretando il brano “ Sob rach rach”. Il successo ottenuto con la sua esibizione la  farà conoscere presso il grande pubblico assicurandole  fama a  livello nazionale.


Maâti Bachir e Khelifi Ahmed, due grossissimi nomi della canzone algerina, cominciano ad interessarsi a lei e l’accompagneranno nel suo percorso artistico permettendole di raggiungere un grande successo in brevissimo tempo.  Khalifi Ahmed, il decano del canto beduino soprannominato “Il cantante della steppa”, elogerà sempre il suo stile vocale nell’esecuzione dell’arte del Mawwal.

Nel 1977 prende parte in qualità di attrice al film del regista algerino Nadir Mohamed Azizi  intitolato “Zaitun buhlilat “ condividendo il ruolo principale con Ezzedine Mujobi , il famoso attore che verrà ucciso nel 1995 dal terrorismo islamico. L’importanza di questo lungometraggio sarà riconosciuta in tempi recenti. Si tratta infatti di una delle poche pellicole algerine ad occuparsi di questioni sociali  in un particolare periodo storico che tendeva a mettere in ombra il cinema impegnato culturalmente.

Grande interprete della cultura Chaoui, timida e riservata, questa talentuosa artista dotata, oltre che di una voce potente, di un lirismo davvero particolare, ha contribuito con le sue canzoni ad arricchire il patrimonio culturale algerino per più due decenni. Sono più di centoventi i brani da lei registrati depositati presso gli archivi della televsione algerina. Canzoni che hanno fatto di lei una delle regine del canto beduino dell'Algeria orientale (al pari di Teldja, cantante alla quale spesso è accumunata). Nel 1992 terrà il suo ultimo concerto in occasione di un evento benifico. Una grave malattia la porterà alla morte l’anno successivo. Chaba Zoulikha morirà il 15 Novembre del 1993 nella sua casa di  Kouba, comune nel  quale risiedeva da anni. Il suo corpo sarà sepolto a Khenchela, sua città natale.
