Titar

Titar is a Moroccan musical group born in Agadir in the late 70s. At the beginning of the same years the Moroccan music scene was crossed by a wave of renewal by groups such as Nass el Ghiwane, Jill Jilala and Lemchaheb. The groups born subsequently were all labeled as belonging to the Ghiwani Generation, a generation of musicians who, while always keeping an eye on the national and local tradition, brought a breath of fresh air and contaminated its songs with different sounds belonging both to the west than the eastern area in general.

If in the area of northern Morocco the wave of renewal and the bands that will be part of it will be called Ghiwani, as far as the southern regions are concerned, the area commonly called Souss, the new sounds will be known as the Tazenzart style.
The group called Titar can easily be counted among the architects of this renewal, even if the Tazenzart style was born in the early seventies, thanks to the original musical proposal. The project was born on the impulse of Ibrahim Mubtassim who gathers around him four other musicians including: Hassan Akadem, Ben Sheikh, Hatamat and Tabaroâat. Unlike other groups belonging to the Tazenzart style of sound , the Titar group decides to contaminate their music with Indian sounds, the result of the group's intense passion for films of Bollywood, and adopts the use of Buzuk instead of the Banjo, one of the fundamental instruments of music from Asia Minor and Greece.

The result of this experiment is a truly unique sound that combines the tradition of Amazigh music, represented by sounds belonging to the Gnawa, Hassaniyya and Rways culture, with the melodies of Indian music.
The songs of the group will spread very quickly and will get wide consents by virtue of texts built with a simple poetic language, but very lyrical and profound, full of emotions and humanity, sung in Tachelit, the amazigh language proper to Souss.

However, the group will have a short life and as soon as it was born, it suddenly dissolved. In the local imagination it will become a sort of reference point and on 05 April 2007 the Al-Khayma association will organize a tribute evening for Ibrahim Mubtassim at the municipal hall of Agadir. The group will return to perform in the company of some new bands that from Titar have drawn inspiration including: Iguidar, Idnan, Atigue, Timitar and Izenzaren Chamkh.
The evening was a real success and the audience paid a heartfelt tribute to the whole group and in particular to Ibrahim who is considered a person of high moral stature. Following the earthquake that struck Agadir in 1960, Ibrahim Mubtassim lost his family when he was only ten and was trapped under the rubble for three days. Years later, in order to sustain the group's expenses, he sold the properties he had inherited so deep was the motivation to carry on the beautiful Titar project.
