Two simply fantastic mixtapes born together to face with a relaxed spirit the difficult moments created by the bad situation in which the planet finds itself, not only in terms of health. Whatever you think about belly dancing, what is certain is that it was once performed to the tune of fantastic music capable of creating a very special emotional state as well as being performed and composed by extraordinary musicians. Here I plan a selection, a handful of the songs I prefer.

On the cover of both Mixtapes we find the fantastic Alia Mohamed, one of the few contemporary dancers who dedicates herself with excellent results to what is called Vintage Belly Dance, the style of the past that Arab Tunes likes so much.

Due mixtape semplicemente fantastici nati insieme per affrontare con spirito rilassato i difficili momenti creati dalla pessima situazione in cui versa il pianeta , non solo a livello sanitario.  Qualsiasi cosa voi pensiate rispetto alla danza del ventre , ciò che è certo è che una volta era eseguita sulle note di una musica fantastica in grado di creare uno stato emotivo davvero particolare oltre che essere suonata e composta da musicisti straordinari. Ne propongo qui una selezione , una manciata dei brani che prediligo.

In copertina di entrambi troviamo la fantastica Alia Mohamed, una delle poche danzatrici contemporanee che si dedica con ottimi risultati a quella che viene chiamata Vintage Belly Dance, lo stile del passato che piace cosi tanto ad Arab Tunes.

“What was and what could have been”. This could be the title of the post dedicated to the musical group called Aiwa that with two splendid albums and a series of electrifying performances thrilled the music scene (not only French) for a few years and then disappeared without a reason.

Born in Rennes in July 1998 on the initiative of the brothers Naufalle (Voice and percussion) and Wamid al Wahab (Bass) and by Séverine Louvel (voice), the project immediately took the form of an open collective influenced by both classical Arabic sounds ( Oum Kulthum, Abdel Halim Hafez, Fairuz), musical legacy of the two brothers of Iraqi origin, both from the experiments in the field of fusion between world music and electronics carried out by bands such as Transglobal Underground and Fun-Da-Mental. In just over three years from its formation the collective has managed to get a lot of acclaim thanks to really exciting performances both at the Montreaux Jazz festival and at the Printemps de Bourges in 2001, despite not having made any albums yet.

In 2002, thanks to the interest of the Canadian record company Wikkid Records, to the group was given the opportunity to make its first long-distance work. Released in 2003 and simply titled "Aiwa", the album can be considered as a true manifesto of the art of the collective. The music it proposes, despite comparisons that are often taken for granted and lacking in imagination, has a strong personal imprint and represents a synthesis of the various influences of its various components. We can speak of a real "Aiwa Sound", a sound that revolves around a certain idea of groove, a mixture of hip hop, jazz, drum'n'bass and classical and popular Arabic music mixed with intelligence and taste, masterfully performed by a line up that includes, in addition to the three founding members, musicians from the Rennes area that include a saxophonist / flutist, a drummer and a DJ (it must be said that in the course of its history the collective has come to count up to 9 members).


The added value of the project is definitely the voice of Severine that presents a truly unique timbre, very close to the mood proposed by Martina Topley years earlier on “Maxinquaye”, the first album by the English musician Tricky. Her vocal textures proposed in English provide the perfect counterpoint to Naufalle's rap performed strictly in Arabic.

The result of this highly complex and diversified amalgam is a sonic hybrid, a sort of journey through Europe, the far, the middle and the near east,in which coexist Gnawa echoes, the jazz of Sun Ra and Pharaoh Sanders, the melodies of Abdel Halim Afez and the kraut rock of Can .

The promotional tour of the album, distributed in 23 countries, led the group to perform in over 110 concerts in France alone between 2003 and 2004. To this gigantic tour must be added performances in Spain, Morocco, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Belgium. Charlie Gillett, who is considered the John Peel of world music, wanted them for two performances in the same year at the program he hosted at the BBC in London.

In 2006, the collective's second work was released for the Wikkid Records label. Entitled “el Nar” (the fire), this new album musically expands the ideas of the previous project while maintaining a certain continuity with the past but showing a greater maturity. Many tracks are oriented towards the sounds of hip hop but the electroacoustic figure is always present that makes the project so special.

The themes of the lyrics range from the denunciation of the war in Iraq (the title of the album refers to the fire that burns people's lives and destroys entire families) to social issues related to integration. The general approach is however very positive, after all, the name Aiwa could be translated with the term Yes, an approval, an invitation to both cultural and social encounters.

Some songs see the participation of various artists and friends including Says of the X Makeena group, Jamalski DJ and American Mc and
Anissa Derkaoui, Moroccan singer active in the Breton music scene.

The tour following the making of the album sees the group engaged in a new series of concerts both in Europe and overseas. The feedback will always be positive and it seems that the collective's musical career is launched towards the definitive consecration.

In 2007 the album "Remixed Vol.1" will be released, containing songs by the group remixed by well-known DJs and international collectives such as Transglobal Underground, Cheb I Sabbah, Billy Rockwell and Majdo. A sort of recognition by the community linked to the most "cultured" club music to the work of the French collective.

Everything at this point foreshadowed a flourishing future but, without a reason, as mentioned at the beginning, this latest work will see the end of the project called Aiwa. From the end of 2008, after ten years of activity and excellent results, there will be no more news of the group.

In 2011 the only Naufalle Al Wahab will participate in collaboration with Snoop Dogg & Dr Dre in the realization of the song "The Next Episode" used for the soundtrack of the film "The Dictator" by Sacha Baron Cohen.



A few years ago,appeared on the web the project created by the Parigo label entitled "Middle Eastern Journey" attributed to the Aiwa collective but created by the A Wahab brothers only . It is a very interesting work that collects instrumental pieces with a cinematic flavor or as the label's website explains: "Middle Eastern film tales from ancient times to modern urban life".



Apart from this, the career of this brilliant ensemble was interrupted, leaving some (including myself) a bitter taste in the mouth. Although apparently similar to other groups already mentioned, the French collective has given life to a truly unique project both from a musical point of view and from a human point of view and it is a real pity that we could not enjoy the great surprises that their music would have reserved for us. if it all didn't end like this.

 

For those who lived in the Rennes area, or were able to reach it comfortably, I would like to point out that lately the group has been performing occasionally, offering the old repertoire.

“Cosa è stato e cosa avrebbe potuto essere”. Questo potrebbe essere il titolo del post dedicato al gruppo musicale chiamato Aiwa che con due splendidi albums e una serie di elettrizzanti esibizioni ha entusiasmato la scena musicale (non solo francese) per alcuni anni per poi sparire nel nulla senza un perchè.


Nato a Rennes nel luglio del 1998 su iniziativa dei fratelli Naufalle (Voce e percussioni) e Wamid al Wahab (Basso ) e da Séverine Louvel (voce), il progetto ha da subito assunto la forma del collettivo aperto influenzato sia dalle sonorita classiche arabe (Oum Kulthum, Abdel Halim Hafez, Fairuz), retaggio musicale dei due fratelli di origine irachena, sia dagli esperimenti nel campo della fusione tra world music ed elettronica portati avanti da realtà quali Transglobal Underground e Fun-Da-Mental. In poco più di tre anni dalla sua formazione il collettivo e riuscito ad ottenere moltissimi consensi a fronte di esibizioni davvero entusiasmanti sia al Montreaux Jazz festival che al Printemps de Bourges nel 2001, pur non avendo ancora realizzato nessun album.


Nel 2002 grazie all’interessamento della compagnia discografica canadese Wikkid Records viene offerta l’occasione al gruppo di realizzare il suo primo lavoro sulla lunga distanza. Uscito nel 2003 ed intitolato semplicemente “Aiwa” l’album puo essere considerato come un vero e proprio manifesto dell’arte del collettivo. La musica che propone , a fronte di paragoni molte volte scontati e privi di fantasia , ha una forte impronta personale e rappresenta una sintesi delle varie influenze dei suoi diversi componenti . Si può parlare di un vero e proprio “Aiwa Sound”, un suono che ruota intorno ad una certa idea di groove , una miscela di hip hop, jazz, drum’n’bass e musica classica e popolare araba amalgamata con intelligenza e gusto , eseguita magistralmente da una line up che annovera , oltre ai tre membri fondatori , musicisti dell’area di Rennes che comprendono un sassofonista / flautista, un batterista e un DJ ( va detto che nel corso della sua storia il collettivo è arrivato a contare sino a 9 membri)


Valore aggiunto del progetto è decisamente la voce di Severine che presenta un timbro davvero unico, molto vicino al mood proposto da Martina Topley anni prima su “ Maxinquaye”, primo album del musicista inglese Tricky. Le sue trame vocali proposte in lingua inglese forniscono il perfetto contraltare al rap di Naufalle recitato rigorosamente in arabo.

I l risultato di questo amalgama altamente complesso e diversificato è un ibrido sonoro , una sorta di viaggio attraverso l’Europa, il lontano, il medio ed il vicino oriente nel quale si fondono echi Gnawa , il jazz di Sun Ra e Pharaoh Sanders, le melodie di Abdel Halim Afez e il kraut rock dei Can.




Il Tour promozionale dell’ album, distribuito in 23 paesi, ha portato il gruppo ad esibirsi in oltre 110 concerti nella sola Francia tra il 2003 e il 2004 . A questo gigantesco tour vanno aggiunte esibizioni in Spagna, Marocco, Svizzera, Paesi Bassi e Belgio. Charlie Gillett, quello che viene considerato il John Peel della world music, li ha voluti per ben due esibizioni nel corso stesso anno presso il programma da lui condotto alla BBC di Londra.


Nel 2006 viene dato alle stampe il secondo lavoro del collettivo sempre per l’etichetta Wikkid Records . Intitolato “ el Nar” (il fuoco ) , questo nuovo album amplia musicalmente le idee del progetto precedente mantenendo una certa continuità con il passato ma dimostrando una maggiore maturità. Molte tracce sono orientate verso le sonorità dell’hip hop ma è sempre presente la cifra elettroacustica che rende cosi particolare il progetto.


Le tematiche affrontate nei testi spaziano dalla denuncia della guerra in Iraq ( il titolo dell’album si riferisce al fuoco che brucia le vite delle persone e distrugge intere famiglie) a questioni sociali legate all’integrazione . L’approccio generale è comunque molto positivo, d’altronde il nome Aiwa sarebbe traducibile con il termine Si, un approvazione , un invito all’incontro sia culturale che sociale.



Alcuni brani vedono la partecipazione di vari artisti e amici tra i quali Says del gruppo X Makeena, Jamalski DJ e Mc americano e Anissa Derkaoui , cantante marocchina attiva nella scena musicale bretone.



Il tour conseguente alla realizzazione dell’album vede il gruppo impegnato in nuova serie di concerti sia in Europa che oltreoceano. I riscontri saranno sempre positivi e sembra che la carriera musicale del collettivo sia lanciata verso la definitiva consacrazione.


Nel 2007 verrà dato alle stampe l’album “ Remixed Vol.1” contenente brani del gruppo remixati da notissimi DJ e collettivi internazionali quali Transglobal Underground, Cheb I Sabbah, Billy Rockwell e Majdo. Una sorta di riconoscimento da parte della comunità legata alla musica da club più “colta” al lavoro del collettivo francese.


Tutto a questo punto lasciava presagire un fiorente futuro ma ,senza un perché , come si è detto in apertura, quest’ultimo lavoro vedrà la fine del progetto chiamato Aiwa. Dalla fine del 2008 , dopo dieci anni di attività e ottimi riscontri non si avranno più notizie del gruppo .

Nel 2011 il solo Naufalle Al Wahab parteciperà in collaborazione con Snoop Dogg & Dr Dre alla realizzazione del brano "The Next Episode" utilizzato per la colonna sonora del film The Dictator di Sacha Baron Cohen .


Di pochi anni fa è invece il progetto apparso in rete realizzato dall’etichetta Parigo intitolato “Middle Eastern Journey” attribuito al collettivo Aiwa ma realizzato dai soli fratelli AL Wahab. Si tratta di un lavoro molto interessate che raccoglie brani strumentali dal sapore cinematografico o come spiega il sito dell’etichetta : ” Racconti cinematografici mediorientali dai tempi antichi alla vita urbana moderna”.



A parte questo la carriera di questo brillante ensemble si è interrotta lasciando ad alcuni( tra i quali il sottoscritto) l’amaro in bocca. Pur se apparentemente simile ad altri gruppi già menzionati il collettivo francese ha dato vita ad un progetto davvero unico sia dal punto di vista musicale sia sotto il profilo umano ed è un vero peccato non esserci potuti godere le grandi sorprese che la loro musica ci avrebbe riservato se tutto non fosse finito così.



Per quanti abitassero nell’area di Rennes, o fossero in grado di raggiungerla comodamente , faccio presente che da un paio di anni il gruppo si esibisce saltuariamente proponendo il vecchio repertorio.
