Hassiba Rochdi, art name of Zohra Bent Ahmed Ben Haj Abdennebi, was a Tunisian singer and actress born on January 10, 1923 (although some sources point to 1915 or 1918) in Djoumime, a town in the central area of Tunisian , and died on September 26, 2012 in La Soukra. She was the first Tunisian actress to play prominent roles in several Egyptian films.
She was born in a family of landowners and spent her childhood at Mateur spending time listening to Bedouin songs and the art of embroidery and tailoring. During this period is strongly influenced by Tunisian Jewish singers beginning to assimilate their style.
During her adolescence, she encounters many difficulties because of a very severe and violent father. She later affirms about her childhood: "I clung to art. It was my religion and my faith. " After another disagreement with her father, she decides to escape home, taking refuge in the city of Bizerte. She is soon found by the family that forcing her to forced marriage. Luckily she avoids this obligation by fleeing again and settling in Sfax City, a major cultural center of the time, where she can find work at a theater troupe where she begins to perform in her singing performances.
In Sfax, she strikes friendship with singer and actress Fethia Khaïri
who urges her to leave her city of adoption to settle in Tunis. Always Fethia Khaïri presents her to Béchir Ressaïs, boss of the Baïdaphone label, who brought her in Paris in 1937 to record her first singles.
The recordings include the composer and musicologist Mohamed Triki, whom Hassiba Rochdi will later marry, who introducing her to the origins of music and singing, and will create an orchestra specially designed for her.
This wedding will allow her to enter the world of music in great style and will allow her to get in touch with the best Tunisian musicians of the time including: Hédi Jouini, Ali Sriti, Kaddour Srarfi and Ali Riahi.
Marriage with Mohamed Triki will end and once divorced Hassiba Rochdi will marry with US diplomat Henry Blake. With him she moves to New York where she will open a restaurant called with her name.
In 1948, following a politically inconvenience involving her husband and an exiled Tunisian, she moved to Cairo where thanks to the encounter with singer Sayyed Chatta, during a party given by King Farouk, she can enter in the circuit of Radio Cairo which reserves a weekly program that will allow the spread of her songs. In Egypt, her career will evolve with cinema's interest. She will play major roles in four major Egyptian productions and it is said that the famous singer Umm Kulthum, jealous of her success, has been working to end her business in Egypt in this field.
Her latest film will be released in 1997 by Tunisian director Nouri Bouzid.

Hassiba Rochdi , nome d’arte dietro la quale si cela Zohra Bent Ahmed Ben Haj Abdennebi, è stata una cantante e attrice tunisina nata il 10 Gennaio 1923 (anche se alcune fonti indicano il 1915 o il 1918 ) a Djoumime , cittadina dell’area centrale tunisina, e deceduta il 26 Settembre 2012 a La Soukra .È stata in assoluto la prima attrice tunisina a rivestire ruoli di primo piano in parecchi film egiziani .
Naque in una famiglia di proprietari terrieri e ha trascorso la sua infanzia a Mateur trascorrendo il tempo tra l’ascolto delle canzoni beduine e l’arte del ricamo e della sartoria. Durante questo periodo è fortemente influenzata da i cantanti ebrei tunisini dei quali comincia ad assimilare lo stile.
Nel corso della sua adolescenza incontra difficoltà molte difficoltà a causa di un padre molto severo e violento . In seguito affermerà riguardo alla sua infanzia : “mi aggrappai all'arte. E 'stata la mia religione e la mia fede”. Dopo l’ennesima lite con il padre decide di fuggire di casa rifugiandosi nella città di Bizerte .Viene presto ritrovata dalla famiglia che la obbliga ad un matrimonio forzato. Fortunatamente riesce a evitare questo obbligo fuggendo nuovamente e insediandosi nella città di Sfax, importante centro culturale dell’epoca, dove riesce a trovare lavoro presso una troupe teatrale grazie al quale comincia ad esibirsi nelle sue interpretazioni canore.
A Sfax stringe amicizia con la cantante e attrice Fethia Khaïri
che la esorta a lasciare la sua città di adozione per stabilirsi a Tunisi . Sempre Fethia Khaïri la presenta a Béchir Ressaïssi capo dell’etichetta Baïdaphone che la porta nel 1937 a Parigi per registare i suoi primi singoli .
Alle registrazioni partecipa il compositore e musicologo Mohamed Triki ,che Hassiba Rochdi in seguito sposerà, che la introduce alle origini della musica e del canto e che creerà un orchestra studiata appositamente per lei.
Questo matrimonio le consentirà di entrare in grande stile nel mondo della musica e la metterà in contatto con i migliori musicisti tunisini dell’epoca tra i quali figurano : Hédi Jouini, Ali Sriti, Kaddour Srarfi e Ali Riahi .
Il matrimonio con Mohamed Triki non dura e una volta divorziata Hassiba Rochdi si risposa con il diplomatico americano Henry Blake. Con lui si trasferisce a New York dove aprirà un ristorante chiamato con il suo nome.
Nel 1948 , in seguito ad un inconveniente di natura politica che vedeva coinvolto il marito ed un esiliato tunisino , si trasferisce al Cairo dove grazie all’incontro con il cantante Sayyed Chatta, avvenuto nel corso di una festa data da re Farouk, riesce ad entrare nel circuito di Radio Cairo che le riserva un programma settimanale che permetterà la diffusione delle sue canzoni. In Egitto la sua carriera subirà un evoluzione interessando il cinema. Interpreterà ruoli principali in quattro grosse produzioni egiziane e si dice che la famosa cantante Umm Kulthum, gelosa del suo successo, si sia adoperata per concludere la sua attività in Egitto in questo campo.
Dopo questa esperienza Hassiba Rochdi tornerà in Tunisia dove proseguiràla sua attività artistica in entrambi i campi , musicale e cinematografico, lavorando per televisione, teatro e cinema.
Il suo ultimo film sarà del 1997 girato dal regista tunisino Nouri Bouzid.
